We have lived here for many years without taking this trip but recently decided to splurge...it is pretty expensive! WELL WORTH IT. Much to our surprise, we did not feel ripped off. Right now the only way to see active lava is by fly-over. This trip was excellent as the pilot-guide was knowledgable and provided a wonderful experience. Make your plan early in your visit as sometimes (as in our case) the first attempt was aborted after take off because the weather closed in. We returned to the airfield, got a refund and rebooked for the following day. They also have an excellent safety record, good preparation and every seat has a fantastic view. Unless conditions change (as they frequently do, so check) this is the ONLY way you will see boiling or flowing lava in Hawaii. We had a great experience.

Previously reviewed on January 7, 2014, I had some serious concerns with how Blue had handled our reservation (and monies lost on our end). Since the posting of that review, I have been in contact with the Management at Blue and I am happy to say that I have been credited the amount of money that was missing from the original booking. There was good communication with Blue; I helped myself along by having a good record of all email correspondence so they could see the timeline and credit me accordingly. Thank you Blue, for dealing with my problem fairly. I appreciate it.

Our Helicopter Pilot was very professional and fun. He remembered our names right away and made sure to keep us engaged. The customer service on the phone, on-line and in person is really good! I had made a mistake when I booked my flight to the big island but they were very accommodating in still getting us on our tour. My only regret is not taking more time to understand the differences in the tours: I would have liked to take the tour to see the lava flowing in the ocean, so read carefully or ask questions if you have something in mind like that. :) I will use their service when I vacation in Hawaii again, it is well worth the experience and I would say that of almost none of the big ticket items I have tried there. Tips: (1) DO buy the video, it is so worth it! (2) when they say "wear dark clothes for taking photos through the glass" don't forget about your white, pasty arms and legs shining on the glass ;)

I took my family on the helicopter your of the volcano and although it was kind of interesting it wasn't worth the money. The volcano is fairly inactive from the standpoint of seeing real volcano activity. All we were able to see was a little bit of red color showing up in various spots. On the way back we expected to see some waterfalls but the pilot didn't want to go very close to them at all. Kind of disappointing!

Our group of 5 loved this full island tour! Our pilot Greg was great and was very knowledgeable of the history and landmarks. We were able to see the lava bubbling in the volcano and saw several rainbows. The most awesome part was viewing the waterfalls in the valley on the north side of the island. It was amazing! I am so glad we did this tour and would recommend it to anyone! Just do it!

Scott was an awesome pilot. Views of the waterfalls were astounding. If you're visiting the big island, Blue Hawaiian is a must!

Amazing!! This really is the best way to see the island. Scott was awesome with the tour and his ability to answer all our questions. The volcanoes, the valleys, the water falls ... all simply incredible. The best thing we've done so far, and I'm sure will be the best part of our trip!

The power of nature is clearly visible during a helicopter flight over the volcanoes and waterfalls of Hilo Hawaii. The experience is double fun seated in an ECO style, large window and comfortable helicopter by Blue Hawaiian. The service before, during and after the flight is excellent. It took me three attempts before being able to fly due to a tropical depression and other weather conditions, but eventually we took off and the views were stunning. What you get is value for money with 45min of pure adrenaline and absolute awesome views. Safety is very important and this company is really handling things in a very professional way. Does that kill the adventure? It most definitely does not because the experienced and well trained pilots gave us what we paid for. A real must when you are on the big island.

Our pilot Shane was excellent, we had a really good flight, his explanations of the different geological features really added to the trip. We were lucky enough to be able to see the lava glowing orange in various places and could also see where a lava tube was flowing. I would recommend this trip to anyone interested in geography, nature and geology, it was fascinating.

It was perfect. My first helicopter flight and i think i chose one of the best places in the world to do it, so i'll keep on my mind forever, it's something that i recommend for everyone.No complaint about Blue Hawaiian they are professional and i can tell i checked up carefully every company in the Big Island before this flight,i know the price is the first thing we need to consider. So, yes is expensive! BUT it definitely worth.

We did the 2-hour Big Island Spectacular in the A Star. We saw breathtaking views of the volcano, waterfalls, and the coastline. Our pilot, Steve, told great stories and had a fun personality. This experience may not be for you if you're claustrophobic, as you're squished in tightly. You're able to purchase a DVD of your actual flight. Unfortunately, only half of our flight got recorded, but they gave us that for free. I'd highly recommend this experience if you're willing to spend the money.

My husband and I took this trip on our second day in Hawaii. My husband was a little nervous about flying but it turned out great! Our guide was very knowledgeable and we were even able to take photos with the helicopter because we were the last flight of the day. We took the Kona waterfall tour and it was beautiful. If we were to do it again, I would do the volcano tour, I hear it is incredible. I would recommend this company to anyone wanting to see The Big Island from the sky!

We did the 2 hour Big Island Spectacular in the EchoStar which was absolutely the highlight of our 40th anniversary trip! Our pilot Shane placed my wife on a window and me in a middle seat which seemed a bummer at first but I was able to see fine. Shane was absolutely wonderful answering questions and sharing Big Island info throughout our trip. The trip began with a flight to the Kilauea volcano, which I thought would be the highlight. Not so! Lots of pilot and passengers chatter during this part. The second part of the trip, past Hilo, was back along the north coastline to view the Big Island's numerous and very beautiful waterfalls. This was absolutely breathtaking! So much so that there was literally no passenger talking (only Shane) during this period, as we were spellbound. In fact, we'll pick up a framed photo to remember this part. Blue Hawaiian also offers a nice DVD of your trip to remember it by. If you miss this flight, you have not fully experienced the Big Island. Don't miss it!

It is the tail end of our visit on the Big Island and we definitely ended our trip with a bang! Despite some reviews of their experience being unpleasant, we went with blue hawaiian and were extremely pleased with that decision. Some people will complain if the weather doesn't go there way, but blue hawaiian did it all right. Very friendly and efficient service, our pilot, Toshi, was engaging and informative, the aircraft was clean and in fantastic condition, and most of all the views were fantastic. It rained on us in some areas but that is all part of being in Hawaii. We saw lots of waterfalls that my pictures just don't do justice. The service: check in was quick and easy, safety briefing was simple and easy to follow, lemon water provided, the staff straps you in, cold moist towel provided after landing. I myself am a pilot and overall I appreciated the friendliness, professionalism, and comfort that was provided to make that tour as great as it was. Worth the price for the Eco-star if anyone was wondering.

Very professional and friendly staff. Not much lava around at moment so don't expect to see any big lava flows. The staff ask you to wait on the tarmac in the sun for approx 15-20 mins (before you board helicopter) and not allowed to wear a hat so make sure you wear sunscreen if you have pale skin. I got quite burnt on my neck and legs and would have put more sunscreen had I known. There was even a 12 month old baby walking around with no hat on so she would be very burnt! Otherwise, maybe Blue Helicopter can erect a small tent for customers to stand under while waiting? Overall a fun ride and definitely worth it :-)
