I think I'm still hyperventilating about how great an experience this was. Taking a helicopter ride was something I had on my bucket list and what better place to do it but on the island of Hawaii! We flew over most of the island and saw some amazing and spectacular views. For me there were two parts of the trip that were the highlights. First of all flying over the spot where lava is flowing into the ocean. What a privilege to see new land being created. The second big highlight was landing by an 800 foot waterfall and being allowed time to get out and take pictures. Truly an amazing sight to behold. Our flight also included flying through a valley that we were told by Carl the pilot can only be flown through 20% of the time due to weather conditions. How lucky were we? I think that most people would consider the cost of this flight expensive, but I have to say for me personally it was worth the money, and I'm glad I did it. For anyone considering it I would highly recommend.
This was AWESOME! Well worth the money and this company was top notch. Everything was great from our first interaction. Location nice and clean, staff was very nice and friendly. This company also records your trip so when you return you can purchase. The even better part is that the pilot (Janette, I think) personalizes the tour just for those on the tour. She used our names frequently and pointed out things that would be great to do with our 14 month old. We did the 45 minute tour and LOVED every minute. We looked at cheaper options but honestly I think we would have been disappointed and after this experience my expectations are pretty high. So glad we went with this company.
Took the 1 hour ECO tour of Kauai. Blue Hawaiian wasn't my first choice - it was actually my third choice. Based on reviews read here I had tried Mauna Loa first. But at 240+ lbs, I was pushing the limit and I didn't want to run risk of having to buy another seat if I tipped scales over 250 after 6 days of vacation. Tried Jack Harter next. Ditto. Blue Hawaiian's ECO helicopters do 260 per person which I knew would be no problem. After getting to the airport, I saw Mauna Loa's and they look pretty small and weak compared to Blue's. I was glad I ended up with Blue. Also, Blue runs their operation out of a good sized building rather than the canopy tent it looked like one of their competitors used. My biggest fear with Blue was that being on the heavy end, I would be stuck in one of the four rear seats, prob middle, for balance. When we checked in, they asked between my wife and I, which would we prefer have a window and she (being a little nervous) was glad to say me. When seat assignments came out, they had me in rear but next to door. But the other helicopter leaving at same time had a person at front passenger door/emergency exit that didn't understand English, so they had to reshuffle and my wife and I ended up in the front of that helicopter with pilot on left, wife in middle right, and me at the door. Small seat next to pilot wasn't used. Luck! Our pilot was Beth and when we took off a little after 11:00 the weather was perfect. Sunny with a few clouds and little wind. Luck again! But what wasn't luck was Beth. She was expert at handling the helicopter. Smoothest ride ever. And Beth was very friendly, making a point to tell us about herself, ask about us, and give us not just dry memorized dialogue, but interesting tidbits about what we were seeing. Everything from geology and history to native culture and what movies were filmed where. She also made a point to make sure both sides got views of the main points of interest. By time we got to Na Pali coast, clouds were capping the very tops of the mountains which is very typical for Kauai, but underneath it was still gorgeous. As we were headed back to airport and she was asking how everyone enjoyed the flight, my wife asked a general question about where was Wailua Falls because we were going to drive there next. Rather than just tell us, she said, "yeah its right over there - we can go there" So she hung a left, went north a mile or two and circled the falls. Only an extra two or three minutes but a very nice gesture. Yes, it's expensive but for me it was worth every penny. My only regret was that we didn't shell out the money and use Blue Hawaiian when we were on the big island. Next time, we will.
Smooth and scenic ride, Shay was a wonderful and informative pilot. We purchased the $40 video of our entire trip and it is totally worth it...really good quality video. But I have to say I was disappointed in my assigned seat...I was in Seat 6 which is probably the worst place for views on the aircraft. The window seats were assigned to bigger, heavier people but it is disappointing to pay the same amount for an inferior seat as the other passengers did who had better views. Glad I bought the video as my view was often blocked.
Amazing trip. We were first time helicopter flyers, so we were nervous. Very smooth flight. I'm a larger person, but weigh in was very discreet and easy. Seats and seat belts were very comfortable. Highly recommend doing it.
I greatly regret not doing a float plane trip when we were in Alaska, so when we booked for our cruise around the Hawaiian islands a helicopter ride was a the top of my list of things to do. Our flight with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters was everything I wanted and more; our son-in-law summarised it by saying I had a grin from ear to ear for the whole flight. Our pilot, Tim, gave us the perfect mixture of information and facts without boring us and as we all had headphones and shared microphones we could ask numerous questions of our own, which he answered without any hint of having been asked them all before. The huge windows make it easy to take photos and Tim would make passes over the major sites of volcano and waterfalls from both sides so everyone got a good look. It wasn't cheap, but it's another thing ticked off my bucket list and is highly recommended - 6 stars!
We toured the Big Island with Blue Hawaiian and so booked the Kauai tour as well. This trip I was seated next to the pilot and must admit, this was NOT the best seat in the house for taking pictures as there are too many panels and a red flag on the front of the aircraft. However, Mark was a great pilot who gave a lot of history as we flew over the island, told us what movies were filmed where, etc. Weather and wind were cooperative so we got to fly into the V. After taking the 2 hour Big Island tour, I felt like this trip was too short and not enough time was taken to get pictures for each side of the aircraft and was less interactive than our Big Island tour. The island is smaller so I understand 2 hours may be too long but had great expectations after our tour 2 days earlier.
We had a really great experience with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. We felt safe and the ride wasn't too choppy or bumpy at all. The pilot was extremely nice and informative. I only wish we would have hovered by the "Jurassic" waterfall a little longer. I was looking forward to seeing it and I had read in past reviews that they got to see it up close. We only flew by it for a brief moment. Other than that I have no complaints. It was awesome and worth every penny!
Riding in a helicoptors has been a dream of mine. So glad I was able to do it on Kauai. Blue Hawaiian offered us the experience of a lifetime. Staff treated us well, gave us the seats we requested and the pilot was professional. With the ear muffs and background music, I felt like I was riding on air in paradise.
husband booked this trip for me as a surprise......wow, was i surprised, i really didn't want to go at all!!!!! he's a retired police officer and has been in helicopters his entire career......me, never. so, when i knew i was going alone, i was apprehensive. i was forturnate to get seat #2, which is the exit seating. well, our pilot, scott, was retired military, so i felt i was in good hands. the trip was phenomenal. the 1st thing i said to my husband was, "when we come back next year, you have got to do this". the whole staff at blue hawaiian is fabulous. they all want you to have a memorable trip around beautiful kauai. would highly recommend them.
Eli was our pilot, he made the trip more interesting informing us about life on the island. He knew a lot about the volcano, he gave safety tips for hikers and was very knowledgeable about the area. His calm demeanor and skill helped ease my fear of first trip in a helicopter.
My partner and daughter went on our first helicopter flight this week. We had wonderful service from the staff. We were picked up from hotel and check in was easy. Loren was a fantastic pilot. Very funny. My daughter and I got the best seats in the house. My daughter loved it till she got sick from a bit of turbulence. Loren was very kind, trying to distract her, make her laugh. You get incredible views and it was amaxing having all the sites pointed out. But it is quite daunting being in a helicopter. But well worth it in the long run. Thanks so much for looking after us.
See current and past volcanic activity from the air. Add a few waterfalls and farms. See trees starting on lava a locals rebuilding on hard lave where the home was wiped out.
My husband booked this as a surprise when we were in Kona a couple of weeks ago. As others have said, the Big Island is stunning and I was a bit overwhelmed at the entire experience. Greg "Go" was a great pilot/tour guide and very knowledgeable in all aspects of the tour. It was great that we could communicate with him when we had questions. We had a bit of rain, but he went around it and with the rain, came MANY rainbows and we were blessed to see full circle and double full circle rainbows. Go said he was going to rename our tour " the rainbow tour". His music and song selections really added to the trip. I won't spoil it, but the movie theme song ROCKED and was the prefect song to start the trip with! The music really set the tone....giving both excitement and tranquility. The volcanos, waterfalls, shoreline, macadamia trees, small towns, Hilo....all wonderful to see from that perspective. Thank you, Go for such an amazing morning. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii!
Going to Hawai'i has always been my dream and it finally came true for my 30th birthday. After being disappointed with many of things and I truly mean many of things. The last day there I decided I wasn't leaving without seeing the true Hawai'i I've always dreamed of and boy was it totally worth it! From the time we were picked up from our hotel to the time we were dropped off Shawn was so accommodating and personal with all of us on our ride. Our pilot Jeanette totally rocked man! She must truly love her job! We just had to ask about her, as she knew so much information and showed us basically everything there was to do on the island. I'm so thankful I made the choice to fly with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters (Oahu) as it made my whole trip worthwhile and meaningful. I can only hope someone else will be as Blessed as we were to have Shawn and Jeanette make their dreams come true also. Thank you both from the bottom of my heart for making my dream come true!
