To really understand the inevitable power of the volcanoes that created the Hawaiian Islands this is the best way to get the big picture. The 1 hour flight takes you from Hilo airport out over and around the active lava sites of the volcano. You get an excellent view of all the various elements that interact to create the island. There are many aspects to the full experience and the pilots, we had Jeremy, do an excellent job providing a very smooth flight and still explaining the various phenomena. He had a very pleasant manner that was calming for those making their first helicopter ride and at the same time interesting for the other passengers. They are very sensitive to the need to give good views to all passengers, even those in the middle seats. This is a must do. You will never forget it.

We have done the volcano/waterfalls tour with this company many times and have never been disappointed. Great way to see the massive destruction of the lava flows and all the waterfalls that you cannot drive to.

I would just like to say, the thought of going up in a helicopter scares the hell out of me, but, our trip on Blue-Hawaiian Helicopters was a great experience. Our check-in was easy, we stayed 1 mile from the helio-pad. However, we were last to get there. We weren't rushed though and I have to say, the workers there have a system. Very efficient! We were lead out to the helicopter site and then led in couples to the copter. You are seated in and safety belted, your headphones put on. When set, the pilot has a little conversation with us. Very calm and very handsome. I'm liking this a little more than I thought I would! Off we go, it's very cool, I never asked how high up we were but we were pretty damn high, we flew between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on our way to Kiluea. We saw lava breakouts and the changes in climate and atmosphere. There is a huge difference between the east and west side of the island. We then flew to Hilo where we landed and re-fueled and had a potty break. Then off again to tour the coast or Waipo Valley and Waimia Valley. So lush, saw spinner dolphins playing in the water below. Saw the waterfalls. Really beautiful! Then on back to Waikloa, the dry side of the island, Kona. Yes, this was expensive, over $1000 for 2 of us, but it was a once in a lifetime ride for 2 hours and our pilot, Jason, couldn't have made it any better! Thanks to Jason and everyone at Blue-Hawaiian!

In the past Helicopter flights have been disappointing unless you get to land on the ground and get up close and personnel. For example, Lake Eyre and the Bungle Bungles in Australia should only be visited if you can get on to the ground. This was different....it has many wow factors. John our pilot gave an excellent commentary .....he had obviously done his home work and was very knowledgeable. From the start....clean and unscratched windows is appreciated. The first major impact was the ease in following and understanding past lava flows...from source to finish. This can not be appreciated from ground level. Kilauea Volcano itself was disappointing...no fault of the pilot....it simply was covered in steam and cloud. Not to get upset as within a few minutes we could see red flowing lava issuing from a breakout from one of the lava tunnels. More steam and gasses issuing from other breakouts and trees burning and falling due to the red hot lava. The coastal views, dolphins, waves breaking, high cliffs, etc ....all great to see. A real highlight was to enter the near vertical sided valleys with their rain forests and waterfalls tumbling down several thousand feet. Our pilot did an excellent job as he swung around to allow all on board to get a good view. an excellent flight and well worth the cost. On getting home we have watched the video of our flight...it is mostly of good quality and has recorded the full flight as well as the full commentary with inside video as well as external video of our flight from several angles. Great value at $25. We would recommend every one visiting the Big Island to take this flight One last recommendation...the earlier you go in the day...the less likely cloud will interfere with your views.

This was a fantastic experience, but lets get the bad stuff out of the way first. From these reviews there seems to be several common complaints: 1. Cost - yep, this is expensive. A couple will cost close to $1000, but consider it money well spent as you get to see more of the island and the volcanoes in two hours than you will in a week's driving on the ground. 2. Mother Nature may not cooperate - the good news is that the weather over different parts of the Big Island changes constantly. We flew through sunshine, rain, clouds and everything in between. But the bottom line is that there are no guarantees in life, so you pay your money and you take your chances. Lava may be flowing, or it may not. Get over it. 3. The back seats are terrible. No, they are not - at least not on the upgraded helicopters which I recommend. My wife and I got "stuck" in the back seat, but we still thoroughly enjoyed our flight. Sure, it would have been better in the front seat, but see comment number 2 and get over it. Also, if you travel as a couple, just casually switch seats when you land in Hilo at the halfway point; this way you both can experience the outside seat. 4. Two hours is too long to fly - with my tendency for air sickness and my wife's general fear of flying, we hesitated over the two hour flight. But once up the steady chatter of the pilot and the great scenery had the time passing too quickly. The potty break in Hilo also helps. As others have stated, Blue Hawaiian is a first class, professional operation; so I won't repeat a lot of the great things others have said about this company. I will say that my wife, who is a white knuckle flyer on a 747 had no problems with this flight. I have a weak stomach, but the pilot went out of his way to avoid sharp turns and warned us prior to making any movements which might cause problems. During the two hour flight I had maybe five minutes of mild motion sickness. My one complaint is not with Blue Hawaiian but with some of the passengers. When they separated us into our groups for our flight, we were shocked to learn that we would be traveling with a three month old baby. Now I have raised three children and have two grandchildren that I love dearly, but there is no way that I am going to pay $1000 for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and spend it sitting next to a crying, vomiting baby. And any parents that would subject a child and other passengers to such an experience need to re-examine their priorities. I understand that we live in a politically correct age, so companies cannot discriminate. Fortunately, when we made our concerns known to Blue Hawaiian they were able to re-arrange things. I don't know who ended up sitting next to the baby; they obviously are a better person than me. But again, the parents of this child should never have put Blue Hawaiian or myself or their own child in that situation. Again, overall a great experience and one that I would highly recommend.

We did the two hour flight over the volcano and the waterfalls. Our pilot spent a lot of time making sure we got to see what we came for, lava and waterfalls. Although it is not as spectacular as it looks on the brochures this is not a reflection on this company, it just means that the volcano isn't as active as it was when the pictures were taken. We did get to see three small spots of red hot lava and the pilot circled the helicopter both ways so that people on both sides of the helicopter could get good photos. The same happened when we reached the waterfalls. The pilot was also very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. It was a great way to see the Island and saved us a lot of time if we had have driven to the same places (although I am pretty sure you cant drive the the bits we saw lava at)

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the active volcano on the big island - viewing new lava outflow from the active crater of Kilauea was spectacular. The best part of the tour was the extended views of the waipo valley along the north Kohala coast line that Tom, our pilot, showed us during the second stage of the two hour tour. Those views were breath-taking. This was the most memorable activity we did on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Did the big island spectacular that does the volcanoes (seeing running lava!!), the waterfalls, and the coast line that is unaccessible by car. It was a trip. be sure to book early, we were rained out for two days early on in our vacation and were concerned that we might not make it out. So glad we did, it was spectacular. I think they have 6 helicopters, so your chances of going out are better than some of the other smaller companies. We've used them on the other islands and always had a good experience so we went straight to Blue Hawaiian (even though some of the other companies were offering specials and discounts) .. no regrets. Our pilot was and ex black hawk pilot... pretty cool All the seats are good on the choppers. We took the ecostar and I was in the middle back (computer selected .. I was disappointed at first, but got a great view and didn't miss anything) Go for it .. you can't get this perspective from a car (too low, can't access all of it) or a plane (too high, cant get as close)

The two-hour helicopter tour with our pilot Steve, "Helicopter Steve," was excellent. We had our flight within 48 hours of landing on the island. This experience was outstanding and the expert narration by Steve brought it all to life. His extensive knowledge of volcanos, Hawaiian culture, and confident, professional piloting skills made the trip an over-the-top adventure. If you are planning a trip to the Big Island, consider this breathtaking experience early in your visit. It will enhance your trip, and help you orient yourself with the grand scope of the island, its landscape, and its history. As a safety conscious person, I give Steve and the Blue Hawaii service an A+++. This is the second time i have flown with Blue Hawaii Helicopter tours and have been equally satisfied. So, after you fly over the Big Island, head to Kauai and do it there as well. You will see some of the most beautiful scenery on earth, views that you can only see from above. Thanks Steve and Blue Hawaii Helicopter. Worth every penny!

A must do! Awesome helicopter, friendly and professional pilot (Coleen) who knew our names, totally worth it. We did the Circle of Fire tour and got to see a great lava flows from about 1000 ft, which is really close considering its active. You get a better view from the helicopter than a boat since you don't have all the steam in the way, plus everyone on either side gets to see. Big comfy seats in the helicopter, super quiet, and we got to keep a dvd of our visit.

From the reviews we had seen it appeared that blue Hawaiian helicopters on Hilo would give us the sights we wanted to see. We were not disappointed!! The pilot was very professional and took his time so both sides of the helicopter had the same views of the volcano. The pilot was also very informative and was eager to explain the history of the volcano and its effects on the island.

This was an amazing experience. Our pilot Ethan, was very conscientious and made sure we were all comfortable. We were traveling with a 6 year old and a 3 year old. Of course, the 3 year old slept through most of the trip, but the 6 year old truly enjoyed flying around the volcano, seeing the lava tubes, and the waterfalls. Quite enjoyable and a highlight of our trip.

Our pilot Scott was outstanding! We had a great unobstructed view of Mt. Kilauea along with an informative and entertaining commentary from our pilot. You don't want to miss this.

It was fun riding in a helicopter but we were literally on a "scavenger hunt" for lava the whole time. We saw a little red here and there but nothing as shown on brochures. And the waterfalls were nice but we were so high from them it wasn't that great. For waterfalls do zip line instead. Again, riding in helicopter was fun but we wouldn't do it again for that cost.

This is an experience you will never forget. The ride allows you to ride through clouds, see lava and the rocks. You get to ride into the valleys and see waterfalls taller than the Empire State Building. You soar over the blue water and see cliffs. John T, our pilot, was knowledgable and witty. He made the experience memorable. This will be a recommendation I make to all. Spend the money -it's worth it!
