Breath taking both awe inspiring and terrifying for mom but totally relaxing for my son. He's three. Our pilot Steve took my husband, three year old and I alone to the helicopter before we went up in it and let my three year old explore the helicopter. He let him put the head phones on, sit in the pilot seat and my son was so happy and so excited. He loved being one of the guys with pilot Steve and his dad checking out the exterior of the helicopter and discussing it. When we got inside, Steve had the most soothing voice and he just talked us through the whole ride. He gave us tips, checked in with us and gave us an expertly guided tour of the Kohala Coast. My son fell asleep about half way through the tour. For me, I have scuba dived well beyond recreational dive limits, jumped out of air planes, visited the polar bear capital of the world, dove with sharks, worked on fishing vessels in Alaska's Bering sea, I can go on but what I can say is that this is right up there. If not at the top of the list of the most spectacular things I have ever seen. My family had an experience of a lifetime and our guides made it both informative and enjoyable. My husband was completely comfortable. He thought the pilot was a very nice person, didn't miss a beat and gave us a wonderful, knowledgeable tour. We definitely recommend anyone, young or old take the opportunity to experience this.

We did the 2 hour flight with Tom. Yep it was a bit pricey but so worth every dollar. You get to see some spectacular scenery up close that you otherwise just wouldn't. We flew right over the volcano and could see the lava bubbling inside. I was disappointed I couldn't see the lava pouring into the sea, but that was mother natures fault, not Blue Hawaiian Helicopters! The valleys and waterfalls were amazing and the coastline very pretty. We got to sit up front luckily and that was the best view I think, but can't say what it was like in the back seat. We were in the A star helo and the seating was really good. Only thing we found was that it was uncomfortably hot with no air conditioning but the sun was streaming through the glass. Tom was both informative and very entertaining with his little quips and we enjoyed his banter. Thanks for a great experience.

This was our 2nd Blue Hawaiian helicopter trip (first one was on Maui). This was 10 times better! I agree it was a bit pricey but very worth every penny. We did the 2 hour flight with Tom. He was very knowledgeable and a crack up. Our family of 4 shared a smaller helicopter and the only issue is that the two men were over 6' tall and they were feeling pretty cramped after the first hour. However, the scenery helped them forget their discomfort. The views were amazing, nothing you can see from a car or on food. Tom is a very skillful pilot and we were able to really get excellent views of the volcano and especially the rainforest. As another reviewer wrote, the lava hasn't been flowing in the ocean and that would have been spectacular to see but Tom made sure we got to see all of the other natural anomalies that we've only seen on TV. I would skip eating out over missing this tour. I can't imagine it wouldn't be the highlight of your vacation.

We took the hour long Circle of Fire tour from Hilo on our recent trip to the Big Island. The experience was one of the highlights of our trip! Our pilot Scott was fantastic – I would definitely ask for him by name in the future. He was extremely knowledgeable about the island and volcanoes and it was obvious how much he enjoys his job. We got to see the crater that is currently flowing lava as well as forests that are burning because of the lava flow. Toward the end of our flight the clouds rolled in making it difficult to see anything so Scott got permission to take us to see Rainbow Falls in Hilo – definitely cool from the air! We went back can forth on whether to book the flight given the cost and we weren’t sure what we would see, but I can honestly say it was worth it. If you are on the fence about it because of the cost try booking the A-star instead of the Eco-star. We were in the A-star and thought it was comfortable and had great views.

We were scheduled for the Big Island Spectacular 2-hour tour, but weather prevented the volcano portion of our tour. So, we got to the see just the north-side waterfalls and cliffs portion. The staff at Blue Hawaiian were gracious and gave us the option of the other shorter tour (with refund for the volcano portion), or offered to refund our money if we wanted to cancel entirely. Our pilot Steve was so fun - very charismatic, without being annoying or too chatty. ....Be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars per person - don't think you'll get to do this kind of trip for cheap. (Nor would you want to skimp on an activity like this, IMO.) The waterfalls were amazing - a total must-see on the Big Island! If we go back to Kona, we will definitely use Blue Hawaiian to try for the volcano portion of the tour that we missed!

I took the Big Island tour to see the volcanic activity as well as the waterfalls on the island. It was a super tour and showed the diverse topography of the island. Very educational as well. You can purchase a DVD of your tour, which is nice.

Our entire family climbed into the brilliant blue helicopter after being very warmly welcomed by the great staff. Pilot Steve was simply brilliant, both in drawing on our excitement about flying and our desire to see the beauty beyond the roads of the Big Island. He flew us up the Northwest coast, around walls of huge waterfalls, and up canyons that were so stunningly beautiful, I was actually reduced to tears. Nose to nose with waterfalls thousands of feet high is something that none of our family will ever forget. This was our very, very favorite activity on the trip and we cannot wait to get back and do it again.

Wow, wow, wow. I was not too sure this was going to be that good having done Maui and the Grand Canyon, and knowing that a lot of the flight time was over relatively boring scenery (if you fly from Waikoloa). But it was awesome. We had been to VCN before on the last trip to the island and did not get to see any volcanic action or lava. Conditions on the ground were the same this time, so we opted for a flight. Great choice and well worth the money. The perspective is brilliant and you just cannot get it from the ground in the park. You also get the coastline, cliffs and waterfalls etc. Smelling the burning forest from a couple of thousand feet up was another dimension, top pilot. On the whole it`s a great flight with a superb company, highly recommended. Only way to fully grasp the geology.

What a wonderful day. Booked this through NCL cruise line. Picked up at terminal at 8a.m. For a short ride to Blue Hawaiian head quarters. After brief safety video and instructions off we went To the helicopter pad. Barrett our pilot showed us a view from the skies, he was informative and pleasant. Giving all on the helicopter great views for taking pictures.Beautiful! After the AMAZING flight Dummi picked us up again and the helicopter pad and off we went to explore the island. Lighthouse, then off to a beach for a lunch supplied by Blue Hawaiian. Dummi even brought out his guitar and sang for us. Of course lunch wouldn't have been complete without being taught the hula. Back in the van we were off the Hana Lee. This tour was so much more then we had expected. Both Barrett and Dummi were knowledgable and informative. Would recommend This to everyone.

Although our initial experience was not excellent, I am compelled to let my fellow travelers know that Blue Hawaii Helicoptors has gone above and beyond to deal with the issues we experienced. We are especially impressed with the corporate level response to what was challenging for us on our trip. Thank you Blue Hawaii for making things right. Your efforts show that you are a class organization.

You have to understand how much a helicopter costs and the fact that they spend more time being maintained than they spend being flown. That's why it costs so much to fly in one. This is the only way you can really see volcanic action right now though. We took the 46 minute volcano flight on the Eco-star. The pilot was great (Ethan) and everyone on the aircraft got to see everyghing because he made a point to approach things from both directions. We took a fixed wing aircraft tour last time. The helicopter is better.

Good pilot with great narrative and sense of humour. Did a great job trying to give all passengers a good view of the action. Fantastic views of the crater, vents and lava flows, even some waterfalls on the way back. Highly recommend!

We really enjoyed our flight and saw lots of lava as the volcanos were quite active. I don't know how you can really see the volcanos from the ground. Just not the same. Unfortunately my 2 1/2 yr old grandson fell asleep almost immediately! But we did buy the video so one day he can enjoy that. We tried to time it so he had his nap before hand but it just didnt work out that way.

We decided to the 1hr flight over the volcanoes on the big island. We had Coleen as our pilot. What a great pilot she turned out to be. Able to provide plenty of information as we flew along. She would draw everybody out and get them talking. The flight itself was well done. We toured over the volcanoes. Then did a side trip to see some waterfalls. At every turn she would explain what she was doing. Then check to see that we were okay afterwards. Through it all the flight was smooth and well handled.

Fantastic tour! Tim was knowledgeable and thorough with his presentation. I was pleased with his pronunciation of the Hawaiian words. The view was spetacular. It was amazing to see the island from this perspective. I'll do the tour again when I come back to Hilo.
