Will Curry was our fantastic pilot. He knew a lot about volcanos. He made sure that both sides of the helicopter saw everything. I am a nervous flyer, but felt completely safe with him. Spectacular tour! Blue Hawaiian helicopters fly out of Kona and Hilo. To see the volcano, we had to drive to Hilo.
Absolutely and positively breathtaking!!! Best excursion on our honeymoon by far! Highly recommended! Our pilot was extremely friendly and knowledgeabe and gave us ample time to take pictures at each of the sites as well as facing the helicopter in the right direction each time. What a ride!!! THANK YOU!
We had a great time! The staff seemed friendly although didn't get much interaction with them. Our pilot was very friendly and gave us alot of information! The price is high (as is the rest of them) but it was a once in a lifetime experience!
My husband and I did the Big Island Spectacular on our honeymoon. It was truly the best way to see the island and we loved every minute of it! Highly recommended as an activity on the big island.
This is a fabulous way to see great scenery and the overview of the island. A very well organized and professional company. We bought the DVD-bluray that they sell about the islands and since it is professionally done through National Geographic, it is really great. We also bought the one that is recorded on the helicopter and that was nice too. It shows what we saw that day and the people inside the helicopter also with the pilot talking. If you can swing the extra money, I would consider the better quality helicopter because the smaller one that we were on vibrates a lot and gets kind of annoying after awhile. I found the seatbelt system very constricting. The staff was very helpful and efficient.
We booked this tour ourselves rather than the one suggested by our travel agent. In my mining career, I had flowwn in enough choppers to know that the A-Star is a superior machine for sight-seeing. I was also aware that on tours, the seat selection is made by the operator for weight balance so that on other machines one could 'luck into' a poor seat. Scott was both an excellent pilot and an interesting commentator. There were a couple of pre-teen boys on our trip as well as us seniors, and Scott did a nice job of keeping us all invol;ved. He also did a fine job of turning the machine so that we all got a good look at all of the trip highlights. The good weather and apparently higher than average lava flow made for a memorable trip. When we returned to our hotel, we watched the DVD of our trip, and I was amazed by yhe quality of it. It is a great souvenir at a reasonable price. Thanks again to all of you! Aloha!
Barrett/:Pilot was the best. I've done another company on a previous trip and it was good as well but today was Blue Hawaii. There is only ONE company on the Island that is allowed to land at Jurassic Park Falls so you can get out and swim, this isn't it but if you book through Expedia Travel at the Kauai Beach Resort you get a FREE tshirt and DVD. Well worth booking that way. Barrett grew up on the island, great personality, informative and not hard to look at :- ) Great adventure for entire family! It does get choppy in the up and down travels through the valleys and canyons so if you get seasick, this would be the same feeling.
We've flown with Blue Hawaiian twice: Once to the West Maui Mountains & Molokai and once to the lava flows. This company really knows what they're doing and provided us with breath-taking experiences that we still talk about.
For a family of 4 this is a quick way to spend almost $1000 in less than an hour, but there is no other good way to have the experience of entering such remote areas of the islands. I think for my kids this was close to the thrill of a lifetime that they will always remember. The ride was smooth, ran up close to some of the cliffs, hovering for extended periods, slowly turning so you could take it all in. The pilot was very skilled and although he was probably following a script he has said a thousand times before, it was still quite informative and fun. While you are flying he manipulates a collection of cameras to record your trip. I didn't know he was doing this until I saw the DVD they made of our flight afterword. He captured all of the scenery from several angles; something that there is no way you can do with your single camera. The image quality is not HD, at least yet. It is still pretty remarkable although quite low def., VHS tape-like. We saved some money by not springing for the open door or more expensive copter choices. Still the view was very nice.
We had scheduled a whole island tour for the morning after we arrived in Maui. The weather was such that we would not be able to see Haleakala Crater. Blue Hawaiian offerred a different location. They allowed us to opt out and reschedule the following day. Alas, the following day also had inclement weather on the crater. Once again they were more than understanding and allowed us to either cancel altogether or reschedule. We flew with them the following week. It was a surprisingly smooth ride and a beautiful tour. We were in the Eco Star. Highly recommmended.
Booked the trip with some trepidation, which proved unfounded. 45 minutes went by far too fast. Very comfortable helicopter, with great viewing from all seats, and a very experienced pilot. Able to get up close to Sacred Falls was a bonus.
We took the trip that included all of Maui. We had a wonderful time. Never been on a helicopter before. Scared to death, but the ride was smooth and uneventful in that dept., and it was windy. The pilot was great, knowledgeable and kept our interest at all times. The best part is the video afterwards. It's the video from your entire flight. . . . with your comments on the mic. . .so watch what you say! I could do this again. The folks we were with said that their father had checked them out (he was a pilot) and was impressed with their credentials. It's an expensive "tour" to say the least, but well worth it with the scenery in Maui, etc.
My wife and I did the West Maui tour on our honeymoon. We loved it. Her father was a helicopter pilot during Vietnam and we wanted to do a helicopter ride for us, but also to tell him about it, because he would like to hear about our ride. We wanted to pick the best and Blue Hawaiin is the best. It was a great ride and experience!!! We did the Eco-helicopter ride because the Eco has more windows than the standard helicopter. We sat in the co-pilot's seats (when you book ask to sit in the front...they say they seat by weight, but if you ask they sort of overlook that in my opinion). There was a bit of a rocky point during our ride, but our pilot handled it well. He knew a lot about the island and had a sense of humor. He also is a helicopter veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars so we knew he could handle whatever was thrown at us in the air - which made us safe and made our experience a better one, when tie-ing in her father's past.
I've seen too many episodes of "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" where there is an obligatory helipcopter date each season. So of course, this was one of the things I had to do my first time in Hawaii. I scheduled it for my first wedding anniversary. I was not disappointed. My guidebook recommended the West Maui and Molokai tour, so that's what we did. Great guide. He really knew his stuff. The views were breathtaking. Words will not do it justice. There were headphones for asking questions (and our pilot knew how to answer them), but I just wanted to breathe it all in and not talk. It was also fairly easy to take photos. At one point, another passenger asked the pilot to loop around so she could get one more photo, and he gladly obliged.
I’ll reiterate the sentiments of many others here by stating that a Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour is a pretty neat experience. We were scheduled to take the Hana/Haleakala tour, but inclement weather resulted in the staff suggesting the West Maui/Molokai tour as an alternative. We were very pleased with the results. We had spent the previous two days touring Haleakala NP and driving the Hana Highway so we were interested in seeing it from the air, but accessing remote, roadless canyons in West Maui and seeing the incredible cliffs and waterfalls of Molokai was a spectacular opportunity to witness things we never would have experienced otherwise. The Eco-Star helicopters are very nice and the informative, friendly pilot possessed a great wry wit. My wife and seven year old daughter sat right up front, and while I was in the back there were enough windows throughout the helicopter that I had terrific views of the surroundings and was able to take some good photos. Despite usually declining the various add-ons by tour companies, we purchased the video as a keepsake and have already enjoyed reviewing our tour back at home. Although they were offering special prices during our visit, these tours are still quite expensive and the irony that our 50-minute helicopter ride was only slightly less costly than our 9-hour flight (each-way) from the mainland US was not lost on us. That said, if you have a hearty stomach and a little extra disposable cash you will be well rewarded with the experience and memories of a Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour.
