What a great way to see so much of the island! Incredible views and breathtaking Waterfalls, valleys and volcano. I was amazed at the skill of the pilot and the information that he gave. I was terrified to fly, but once inside I felt very safe. My pilot Jason was as calm and professional as could be. Worth spending the extra money for this incredible experience for the longer flight and fancy headphones. The video of the flight is fair, but the fixed cameras don't capture the grandeur of the island and the true beauty of the size and colors.
This was my first time in a helicopter so I have nothing to compare my experience to, but the Big Island Spectacular tour in the Eco-Star from Waikoloa was a life event I'll never forget. One has no control over natural conditions, but apparently everything was in perfect alignment for us and therefore what we saw could not have been much more spectacular than it was. This is a major investment and I truly got my money's worth, thank goodness. The tour guide was low key and relaxed. I liked his style and everyone we dealt with was professional. He shared great information and purchasing the DVD was worth it. My only recommendation would be that they clean the camera lenses more frequently, as we can see water spots and dirt, which makes the video footage less clear. Not that this does any justice to what you see with your own eyes, but the quality of the video could be slightly improved by taking this step, I think.
Awesome experience worth the big bucks. Ride of a lifetime. Greg the pilot was terrific.
Top notch company. Our pilot, Toshi, was fun and informative. It's worth the money. This company has the best reputation around, and for good reason! They're awesome!
Being able to see the majority of the Big Island of Hawaii in a single two hour tour was too good to pass up. This would allow us to see the sights we wanted to see without taking two days to see them. Taking off from the north end of the island we flew in between Manua Kea and Mauna Loa to reach the Kileau volcano. Watching the venting of the volcano from the crater then flying close enough to look in to the center of the crater to see the red glow of the molten lava was amazing. We then flew to the eastern rift, this is the newest location from which the lava exits the earth on its way to the sea. Once again the venting of the volcano at the rift and the sight of glowing lava was a sight to behold. From the eastern rift we made the trek to where the lava was entering the ocean. Watching ribbons of lava flow down and in to the Pacific Ocean was one of the items on my bucket list. The 2,200 degree F lava hit the cool ocean causing the water to instantly boil in to steam. Leaving the southern shore we headed to the east part of the Big Island to fly along and into the deep valleys cut my years of rain and water flowing. Flying in to the valleys we would hover in front of water falls between 1,500 to 2,000 feet tall. I could not have asked for a better air tour of the Big Island that I got with Blue Hawaiian. Their modern helicopter fleet was safe and comfortable. The pilot was very informative, funny and yet a professional pilot. I feel that it was well worth the cost and I would not hesitate to fly with them again and again.
I wanted to see the lava and Pu'u O'o and the rest was a wonderful bonus. It did start to rain over Hilo but by the time we were at the park, the rainbows were out. Yes I would do it again but only if the lava was doing specific things. I did see other helicopters getting in closer but when that close, you can't see the grand scheme of things. At least you are safer up higher and I bet the ride is too. If you are taking pictures, keep your shutter speed high. Between the vibration and distance you need to be at least 1/500th for fair images. Wear black if in front or the reflections will not be good.
This was a great experience. The pilot and front desk representative were both super nice. The helicopter ride provided some great views of the lava and the island. The only part that was below par was quality of the video they offered for sale. If there had been a video that had true color and captured the experience I would have loved to buy it. I'm not sure if certain helicopters have better cameras but ours appeared to be lower than VHS quality which was disappointing. Overall it was really great and I would recommend it to everyone unless you don't like heights or get air sick :)
I would give five stars with no problem, but my husband got a little freaked out. It was his first helicopter ride. He was ok until we came up over the ridge and dropped down. But I had a great time and would do it again. Blue Hawaiian is a great company and would not fly with anyone else. Our pilot was great and very knowledgeable. We got to see the volcano and the lava. Not to mention the damage it causes. But an absolutely worth the flight. You have to do the two hour big spectacular. Get the DVD of your flight. I think it was $25. But it is a must do to see the big island.
Should have written this sooner. I can't speak highly enough about Blue Hawaiian! Super friendly and fun staff when I booked in their office. Everyone was professional, courteous, and helpful getting us ready so early in the morning. Our pilot was fantastic! Great stories, sense of humor and really wanted to make sure all on board had an exceptional experience. Weather was perfect, got to see active lava pot as well as sea entry. The waterfalls were spectacular! No better way to see the big island!
Our family of 5 did the Big Island Spectacular on the Eco-Star... a first helicopter ride for any of us. We particularly wanted to see the volcano & lava -- and indeed it was awesome to see from just a few hundred feet above. The lava flow is not highly active right now, so I doubt we would have been able to see anything from the ground (which I had done years ago at a distance of several miles). The trip along the wet coast's waterfalls and canyons were an excellent bonus. In fact, several of my family members say that was their favorite part of the ride. I was a bit nervous about safety going in, and was not thrilled when we had to exit the helicopter before take-off due to an unexpected engine light. On the other hand, our pilot (Toshi) had been flying for something like 20 years and Blue Hawaiian was running 16(?) flights that day, so I knew our odds were very good. And of course it all turned out fine. We were also a bit concerned about motion sickness, but had no issues. We gave the kids a low dose of Benadryl (pediatrician recommendation) beforehand and also took the first flight of the morning, which is reportedly typically lower wind. While I'm not sure either of these precautions mattered, our flight was quite smooth. Overall, the ride was both a thrill and a memorable life experience. Not sure it's something I would need to do again, but glad we sprung for this time.
My husband and I did the two hour Big Island Spectacular. The entire experience was wonderful. Our pilot was John and he did such a great job describing things throughout the tour and at all the right times he would say " okay, I'm going to stop talking now and let you all just enjoy the beauty". The Big Island Spectacular was just that, spectacular! If you're wondering if it's worth the money, my answer is yes! I highly recommend Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours!
WOW that sums it up. Im not one to do schedule kinda trip but let me tell you I have not bin able to stop talking to my friends about this experience. At several points i felt like i was not on vacation but on an adventure trip. And the service is the icing on the cake the staff is there for you and they show it
Both my husband and I had never ridden in a helicopter before so we were super nervous. Within the first 5 minutes our pilot, Miguel, had us at ease and we were able to release the death grip my husband and I had on each other. The views, the history lessons... Everything was perfect. I highly... HIGHLY recommend using Blue Hawaiian.
This was a truly amazing way to see the island of Kauai. We had Scott as pilot and he did a great job of giving us the tour of the island from the sky. This is one more expensive helicopter tours but it is worth every penny. Kauai is really difficult to see in most parts of the island from the ground so you have to see it by air. Book online prior to coming to the island and save some money on the tour. Also make sure you pay the $40 to get the blue ray/thumb drive copy of your flight. Couldn't be happier that we were able to do this on Kauai. When we return to Hawaiian islands. I'll make sure I book Blue Hawaiian to see the other islands from the sky. Truly excellent!!!
Wow, wow, wow! This was the most amazing helicopter tour. Our pilot, Geoff, was a former Army pilot, so friendly, and so personable. We drove to the shopping center, watched a short safety video, and boarded a van for the airport. The next hour was absolutely amazing. Geoff flew us around the island and introduced us to his love of Kauai. He was so kind and friendly. After the great tour, hundreds of great photographs, and an unbelievable hour, we were returned to the airport where the staff took a photo of us in front of the helicopter. Upon returning to the shopping center, we purchased a DVD of our trip, audio and video, for a bargain $25. TAKE THIS TRIP! Thank you Geoff.
