Quiet & roomy helicopters. Impeccable service and an unforgettable tour of Kauai. A big "Mahalo!" to our pilot, Joffrey, who was very friendly and knowledgeable.

At the mercy of what seat you get assigned without your advance knowledge-buyer beware!
Kauai - Lihue

So what your tour booking agency doesn't tell you in advance (something that Blue Hawaiian should be 100% responsible for making sure they disclose NO MATTER WHAT) is that these helicopters are 6 seaters and thus more subject to weigh distribution requirements and therefore your view might be minimal if you are sitting in the back 2 middle seats yet you have to pay the same as everyone else-you get no choice in the matter. The other 4 seats are 2 in the front next to pilot (great views!) and 2 in the back but directly at the windows for pretty good views. Guess where I was stuck? With a limited view in one of the 2 back middle seats-total bummer-I got to see a lot of close ups of other people's heads. At least when I did the volcano tour on the Big Island about a decade or so ago while the helicopter ride was, yes, a bit bumpier at that time due to the state of the technology, at least the helicopter only held 4 riders plus the pilot so all the views were at least pretty good. Thus, in conclusion, they should at least offer a back middle seat discount in the event you get stuck there.

Bucket list item for sure!
Big Island - Waikoloa

This is something we knew we had to do on our vacation to the big island of Hawaii. My family of 4 (hubs, 16 yo daughter, 11 yo son and myself) went on the 7:00 am tour on Christmas morning. This meant we had to be there at 6:15 am. The ladies in the office were so sweet and helpful, especially for being there so early on Christmas! Our pilot was Tom. Not only was he funny, he was a wealth of information about the island. He was patient and took the time to make sure to maneuver the helicopter so everyone had the perfect vantage points of the lava and waterfalls. He also tried to find a whale or two, which he did! This was the perfect tour and really made our trip worthwhile! My hubs and I went on a helicopter tour in Kauai with another company in 2010. While I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was so turbulent! I was pleasantly surprised the only turbulence on this flight on Christmas was leaving the canyon of waterfalls (totally expected)!

Great helicopter ride
Big Island - Hilo

Did not know that helicopter tour of the volcano needs advanced reservations - still the good folks at Blue Hawaiian Helicopters found us some spots and the experience was worth every cent. The ground staff is very friendly, the pilot was awesome - he was ready to answer all questions and all those tidbits of information made the trip an unforgettable one. Live lava flow was icing on the cake !!!

We researched a number of different helicopter tours on Kauai before settling on Blue Hawaiian.  The safety record is top notch and the staff are very professional. The enclosed helicopters seat 6 passengers - 2 in the front next to the pilot and 4 in the back.  You don't get to pick your seat since they are assigned once you arrive (based on weight), but you should get to sit next to your partner.  Even in the back you have a nice view, so don't fret! The ride is cushy with Bose noise canceling headphones and comfortable seats.  Music plays in the background and then mutes when the pilot comments about the scenery.  The whole tour is available afterwards to purchase on DVD if you decide you just want to enjoy the tour without taking pictures during the flight. We did the 55 minute ECO adventure tour which was great.  I was a little disappointed when I found out my husband paid full price since there are lots of coupons once you arrive in Kauai (and potentially online but I didn't check) for $60+ off per couple.

I hate heights. But this company has a really good reputation and I'm glad I went on it.  The staff are really professional and know the island well. The helicopter captain kept saying that he had stars like Harrison Ford and Charlize Theron in his helicopter.. I thought that was unnecessary information. But nonetheless, he showed us really great views of the island. I wish I took more pictures! And yes, it is expensive, but believe me it's worth it especially for Kauai since most the island can't be seen by car/tour bus.

Kauai - Lihue

So I'm generally not a fan of helicopter tours, but considering how many movie scenes have been shot by helicopter in Kauai, it seemed like something I had to do.  But, being that helicopter travel is pretty dangerous (statistically speaking), I was willing to pay a little more for a legitimate organization, and I was very happy with Blue Hawaiian.  Based on what I saw at the Lihue airport, they are probably the largest tour operator with 5 helicopters, have the newest choppers and are the best organized.  Their operation is run with Southwest Airlines like precision and I felt well cared for in every part of the journey.  Definitely worth the price premium.

This company really has it together. They had everyone step on a scale upon check-in, and the computer calculates seat assignments between the three choppers, making the weight and balance considerations a no-brainer. After check-in they safely stowed all of our non-essential items in the back room, showed a quick and dirty orientation video, passed out PFDs and then loaded us into shuttles, dropping us off at the airport directly in front of the helipads. We watched from covered seating as the helis came in one by one, and everyone was loaded in a safe manner, with plenty of staff on hand to keep it that way. The windows of the chopper were clean and the view was uninstructed even from the middle seats, and our pilot was very professional as a pilot and knowledgeable as a tour guide. He used the capabilities of the aircraft to our advantage and made sure that everyone for a great view of all of the sights to see, plus a DVD of our flight was recorded with four on-board cameras for purchase afterwards. Although this tour was very expensive as far as tours go, it was worth every penny and I would fly with them again on another island if I ever get the urge to do so.

Kauai - Lihue

One of the best (and only) ways to see Kauai is by helicopter since over 70%(!) of the island is inaccessible by car. After researching various helicopter tour companies, I decided to go with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. They've received lots of accolades and seemed to have the best reputation for service, experience, and safety. B and I were fortunate enough to be seated in the front of the helicopter with the pilot. By far, the best seat in the house with open views in all directions. FYI - you can't reserve the front seats. The seats are assigned by the computer based on weight, and you're more likely to sit in the front if you're lighter. The most amazing part of the flight was flying into the middle of the island and being completely surrounded by waterfalls. Our pilot performed a smooth 360 turn so we had a total panoramic view of all the falls. With almost 800 inches of rain each year, this is the wettest spot in the world! The helicopter ride was spectacular and well-worth the $200/person. [Tip: Book online to save 10%.] I would highly recommend Blue Hawaiian Helicopters...the staff was professional, the helicopters looked new and felt safe, and the experience was mesmerizing.

It was hard to decided which helicopter tour to go with cause a couple of them have good reviews. We were pleased with this company.  I think our pilot was Ken and he was very professional and kind.  He checked to make sure everyone could hear him on the intercom. They are very organized. We had entertainment on the bus ride to the airport provided by the driver who shared a few of her lame jokes, cute lady and she was the one who admitted her jokes were lame.

This is the perfect way to see the island!  The view of the Na Pali Coast inspired me to do the Na Pali outrigger race soon.

The pilot was great and the tour got me to some amazing sights that could not be experienced any other way. Their outfit made me feel safe and their office and helicopters were clean and seemed well maintained. They share a fairly dirty bathroom with the strip mall and the woman at the office was a little mean - but everything else was great!
