We were in Hilo on a ship on January 28,2017 and had scheduled a tour through the ship of the volcanic area. We had previously taken the same tour roughly three years earlier and each time it is so worth the cost. Blue Hawaiian does a wonderful job of taking you to the active area / scenic areas and the pilots do a great job of making sure each guest gets a good view of the area being featured by either making multiple passes from different angles or rotating the helicopter so that passengers in the back seat get great views of the focused action or scene. In our particular case, roughly 26 acres of solidified volcanic flows had broken off Big Island and fallen into the sea about two weeks before we arrived. On the day of our tour, lava was flowing into the sea from the volcano at roughly 1million gallons/3.7 million liters per hour. You may have seen news reports about this. With a flow that strong there was a great amount of steam and explosions at the water level. Our pilot made four passes over the site - two that favored each side of the helicopter to insure all the passengers had great views. Diane got some fine pictures from her position in the left rear window seat. The pilot then flew toward Kilauea toward an open caldera from which the lava was flowing. When we neared the caldera, he repeated his earlier maneuvers to insure everyone got a great look of the lava flowing under the surface toward our viewing location at the ocean. The pilot took care to point out silvery patches with hot lava that had not yet cooled completely and vents colored white and yellow to reflect the chemical composition of various parts of the lava. From there we flew to the back country to look at the waterfalls arising from water flows coming down from Mauna Loa to the sea near Hilo. And, finally, a quick pass over our ship as we returned to the heliport. Because of the lava flows, this was probably the most spectacular trip we have had with Blue Hawaiian. But, we have never had a "poor" trip with them. This was the third trip that I remember with them - two from Hilo and one on Kauai. And, it is a trip that we recommend always to friends.

Brodi gave an amazing tour with commentary and lots of shared knowledge. He really exemplified the beauty and peace experienced here on the island. Phenomenal.

We have been on helicopter tours on every island but NONE even came close to the thrill and emotion that today's ride over the active volcano was! Our pilot Chase took us down and close to the volcano that was boiling with lava, the lava flowing inro the ocean then into the deep canyons to see the waterfalls. The music playing in the headphones was perfect to what we were seeing and we were all in tears, it was so powerful a moment and never to be forgotten!
