We took the one hour tour of the island and it was worth it. Red lava, lava tubes, volcanos, waterfalls, everything you would want to see you will see it. You can't go over the active volcano for obvious reasons, but you still could see it from the legal distance.
Professional, safety first, precise, friendly, informative...this was the highlight and favorite excursion of our family vacation! Everyone in our party, ages 86 to 4 years old had a grand flight.....A+ Hugely expensive but worth every penny. Sights and views are so different from the air than they are on the ground. You could never hike to these locations. Just do it.
We were skeptical, having never flown in a helicopter before, but decided that we needed to see the Big Island in ALL of its glory on our final day in paradise. It was a great decision! The professionalism, courtesy and friendliness was unparalleled from the moment we arrived through our departure from this must-do experience. Our pilot, Noah, was so accommodating while providing us a truly memorable afternoon. We have been gushing about it to anyone who will listen. My wife wanted to go back up for another run immediately after landing.
Unfortunately, we couldn't do the big tour the entire week we were there, due to weather issues. Safety first, and I personally think if the pilots say it wasn't safe to go see the volcanoes, I'm not going to argue. We did get a spectacular tour of the waterfalls. Beautiful. Amazing. The pilot was superb. Fly with these guys; they are the Cadillac of the helicopter tours. Highly recommend. We will do it again.
We took the 2hr island tour. Greg, the pilot, was friendly and provided lots of great and informative info on the island. We saw the volcanoes, Hilo, the rain forest, the north shore and the Gold Coast. The valleys on the north shore were incredible. From the moment they picked us up at our hotel, through the check in process, the safety briefing, the flight and the post flight, Blue Hawaiian was very professional. The cost is pricey, but we had a really good time.
Breath taking views from above. The pilot was very friendly and knowledgable. The cliffs and waterfall tours were the best. I really enjoyed it.
We really questioned spending so much money on this but it was worth every penny. They picked us up at the hotel and took us to their facility which is very close to the resort. The people could not be nicer and our pilot, Toshi, was fantastic. I am not a great flyer but within minutes I was at ease with his obvious skill and great sense of humor. My kids will never forget this experience and agreed it was the best part of our whole trip. Do the 2 hour trip. It is well worth it.
I have two young kids and they thought this was amazing. The helicopter ride was great and would have been enough to make the day, but then to fly over lava was a mind blowing experience for them. Great trip. Great staff. Don't miss it.
We took the flight over the volcano and then the waterfalls when we visited Hawaii in March. We just got home and watched the DVD today and it brought it all back to us. It was a truly wonderful experience and we did love every minute of it. Colleen is an excellent pilot and also a really good tour guide - she gave us a lot of interesting information about the island and the volcano. The flight was comfortable and the views were breathtaking. We have the happiest memories of this excursion and it is definitely one of the highlights of our world cruise. I would thoroughly recommend it and thought it was well worth the money.
We had a great flight in the EcoStar helicopter. We took the Haleakala / Hana tour and cold look right into Haleakala to see the cinder cones. Saw lots of waterfalls and the pilot was very informative. The staff at Blue Hawaiian were extremely helpful and made sure everyone knew what to expect.
We have lived here for many years without taking this trip but recently decided to splurge...it is pretty expensive! WELL WORTH IT. Much to our surprise, we did not feel ripped off. Right now the only way to see active lava is by fly-over. This trip was excellent as the pilot-guide was knowledgable and provided a wonderful experience. Make your plan early in your visit as sometimes (as in our case) the first attempt was aborted after take off because the weather closed in. We returned to the airfield, got a refund and rebooked for the following day. They also have an excellent safety record, good preparation and every seat has a fantastic view. Unless conditions change (as they frequently do, so check) this is the ONLY way you will see boiling or flowing lava in Hawaii. We had a great experience.
Previously reviewed on January 7, 2014, I had some serious concerns with how Blue had handled our reservation (and monies lost on our end). Since the posting of that review, I have been in contact with the Management at Blue and I am happy to say that I have been credited the amount of money that was missing from the original booking. There was good communication with Blue; I helped myself along by having a good record of all email correspondence so they could see the timeline and credit me accordingly. Thank you Blue, for dealing with my problem fairly. I appreciate it.
Our Helicopter Pilot was very professional and fun. He remembered our names right away and made sure to keep us engaged. The customer service on the phone, on-line and in person is really good! I had made a mistake when I booked my flight to the big island but they were very accommodating in still getting us on our tour. My only regret is not taking more time to understand the differences in the tours: I would have liked to take the tour to see the lava flowing in the ocean, so read carefully or ask questions if you have something in mind like that. :) I will use their service when I vacation in Hawaii again, it is well worth the experience and I would say that of almost none of the big ticket items I have tried there. Tips: (1) DO buy the video, it is so worth it! (2) when they say "wear dark clothes for taking photos through the glass" don't forget about your white, pasty arms and legs shining on the glass ;)
I took my family on the helicopter your of the volcano and although it was kind of interesting it wasn't worth the money. The volcano is fairly inactive from the standpoint of seeing real volcano activity. All we were able to see was a little bit of red color showing up in various spots. On the way back we expected to see some waterfalls but the pilot didn't want to go very close to them at all. Kind of disappointing!
Our group of 5 loved this full island tour! Our pilot Greg was great and was very knowledgeable of the history and landmarks. We were able to see the lava bubbling in the volcano and saw several rainbows. The most awesome part was viewing the waterfalls in the valley on the north side of the island. It was amazing! I am so glad we did this tour and would recommend it to anyone! Just do it!
