We only had 5 full days on the Big Island and we figured this was the best way to see the volcano and some lava. I have a fear of heights so I was afraid the helicopter ride would freak me out, but you only live once so I womaned up and did it! I'm so glad I did. What calmed me down was that they focus on everyone's safety. They were all very friendly and helpful. Our pilot was also very friendly and gave us some great information. We flew over waterfalls and the active volcano. We were lucky enough to see some lava. It wasn't gushing into the air or anything dramatic, just a mellow day for the volcano I guess. After that we followed the smoke on the ground and saw a lava tube. Then we flew over the coast a bit although there's no lava currently going into the ocean, but that's just nature for you.
We've done helicopter tours around the world and thought this was going to be the highlight of all of them. Sadly dissapointed. The pilots interaction with us felt scripted and painful .... the journey felt long and monotonous. The 'wow' moments we did have paled into insignificance as we seemed to fly over a lot of nothing interesting. The volcano activity - or lack thereof - is hardly their doing ....but their marketing and advertising material do little to set your expectations for nothing more than a bit of smoke and bubbles. If you're keen to see the volcanic activity - visit the national park and save yourself a fortune. The valleys and coastline were also wonderful to see ...but again ...a day trip in a car (even if you hired it for the day) would work out far, far cheaper and probably gaurantee you a lot more fun, memories and photos.
Arrival was greeted with a very helpful and courteous front desk. They explained it all and took our names and reservations. We then went to a waiting area that was nicely done. There was a preflight briefing that was conducted by staff that was mandatory by the FAA but wasn’t as mundane as the airlines preflight safety talks. Once completed, we were escorted out to our helicopter and met our pilot. Roger was very nice and knowledgeable concerning the trip and the volcano’s. The helicopters are all newer and looked to be well maintained. We received a free upgrade to the bigger better aircraft because we booked at the hotel prior to leaving. We were all seated according to weight and who you are with. They helicopter hold 6 plus the pilot. Everyone gets noise canceling headphones and a mic to talk into during the flight if you have questions. One you put on the headphones everything is so quite. They play music and it makes the flight so much more calming for those of you who are a little afraid of flying. Like I said Roger our pilot was very informative and nice to be under his command. The flight lasted about 50 minutes and we got to see some Lava flows and the devastation left from past flows. We were unfortunate that there wasn’t any lava flowing into the ocean but they expect it to be reaching the ocean within this month. So by the time you read this you should be able to fly up and see that bizarre view. Over all I give them a solid 5 for the professionalism and fun time to be had.
My wife and I did the Kohala Coast ride. It was a lot of fun and we would do another ride with Blue Hawaiian. You get to see views of the coastal cliffs and 2000ft waterfalls that you just cant see otherwise. We were on an A-star helicopter in the back seats. It was pretty cramped with 4 of us across the back, but even the back seats have very good views. The pilot also flew us right into some of the valleys and circled in front of the huge waterfalls. If you go on a windy day, there will be lots of turbulence. I wouldnt recommend this for someone who gets motion sickness.
This was a great experience. I highly recommend it. Its kinda expensive but when will you ever get the chance to do something like this again? We had Jeremy as our pilot and he was great... very informative and entertaining. He even provided excellent background music.
Unfortunately, we had iffy weather, but the pilot did everything he could to find magma - and he did! I'd do this again on a clear day in a heart beat. Fly the eco- star - way better viewing. The pilot, Greg, did a great job pointing out the sights.
This attraction can get pretty expensive for a family of four, but I don't think any of us will ever forget it. We opted for the 45 minute Volcano tour and it was pretty amazing. We got to see some very unique views of the coast and of the volcano. The pilot was very nice and very knowledgable as he pointed out several points of interest. I think this is a great tour for kids as the longer 2 hour tour may leave them feeling a little airsick. If we had flown any longer, this may have been the case for half of our party.
During our first visit to the Big Island my family and I took a tour on a Blue Hawaiian helicopter. My oldest son and I sat in the front with our pilot, Jeremy Taylor and my youngest son in the back with my honey. No matter where you sit in the helicopter everyone will get a good view. Jeremy was very professional and knowledgeable during our tour around the active volcano, lava flow and it's history. He also pointed additional information regarding the cities, beaches, farms, and Jack Thompson's bed and breakfast lava house as we flew over them. You learn so much important information that when you leave it makes you want to learn more by doing your own research. Please note, it rains pretty much 365 days a year on this part of the island but it does clear off and on throughout the day bringing the sun out so you can enjoy both every couple of hours, the weather is still nice and warm with the rain. During our flight it rained a bit but we still were able to enjoy the flight. We also purchased our tour DVD for a few dollars which also included the conversation during the flight. This is just another memorable experience your family will take back home and will share with everyone. :)
Mahalo to our pilot, Tim. The ride was awesome, the views extraordinary! So very happy we flew with you!
Fab! Greg is friendly and made the experience so enjoyable with his commentating. Views were special/ magic. Thanks for filling my dream. To top it all off I received an email thanking me for my feedback they posted a copy of the Hawaii video free to my home address in New Zealand.
we flew with blue hawaii on Hawaii (the big island) great - 2 hours of fantastic views and you are able to talk with the pilot and the other passengers - other services don't allow you to talk to either the pilot or the other passengers - a bit stifling! You can ask questions and hey presto get knowledeable answers - much better than sitting in silence. Most pilots are ex service so their flying is beyond reproach and very friendly. We hit a few rain squalls - what a shocker on the hilo side of hawaii - it is one of wettest places on earth, but dale the pilot made it a very enjoyyable ride. Totally recommend this service to anyone!
Great trip! A wonderful experience. Beautiful, Breathtaking, Informative too! Jeremy was a great pilot with the right amount of narration and allowing us to enjoy. As the owner of an Infinite Safari Adventures - an African Safari company I know what makes a great experience and you guys did it. Thanks!
The cost of this trip makes you think long and hard - however, after having done it - I would highly recommend doing it. We were lucky to have one of the clearest days they had in weeks to fly over the volcano. The Pilot was very knowledgeable and enhanced the experience in the air with his running narrative in certain spots.
Aside from the phenomenal views, the staff and pilots are top notch. From the moment you place your reservation to when you order your DVD (and you will), the staff goes out of its way to make you feel welcome an excited. Our pilot today was skilled, friendly and extremely knowledgeable of all the sights and island history.
The beauty & majestic sights of Hawaii can only best be seen in all it's splendor from the air:)) Our pilot, Dave, & all their staff are the best trained in their field. Safety & customer service is of the upmost! They have earned the reputation of being the best with Frommers & National Geographic!! We did the 1:45 Majestic Tour from Mauna Kea to the waterfalls off the Hilo coast. It's was breath taking to say the least. You can not see the island by car in the same way. A must if you're going a first time & if you're going back & didn't do it!!! Save 10% by booking on line 5 days in advance. No matter what anyone tells you, do it first thing in the morning, @ 7 am & go on the smaller of the two suez helicopters if you are concerned about motion sickness. I sat right next to the pilot & my son sat back seat window. We have the most amazing lava & waterfall pics!!!
