We were scheduled to fly over the volcanoes but the clouds were below minimums so we flew between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and then up the coast to Hilo and along the North coast and back to Waikoloa. The pilot was excellent, describing what we were flying over, interesting facts and his personal feelings about his favorite places on the island. We were glad that there was flexibility in the flight plan. In some ways the north coast is more spectacular than the volcanoes.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable ride with Grego! The music that played during our flight made it all more fun. It was a great ride with spectacular views of the volcano, waterfalls and valley.
I flew on Blue Hawaiian Helicopters from Hilo, even though we stayed in Kona. The pilot was terrific and our 50 minutes flight was well-scripted and gave us a great view of so many volcanic features. If you're staying in Kona, you really should drive to Hilo - the drive is beautiful and take this shorter and less expensive ride, rather than flying all the way from Kona - unless you really enjoy lots of time in a helicopter
This was a great trip! We hiked to the Volcano and then took a helicopter to see the lava from the air. It was pretty cool. We also did the waterfall landing and Huamkua Coast. Excellent. A little pricey but well worth it. Went in february. saw few whales from the air. The whole body, mom and calve. neat. The lava flows from the air amazing. This pilot was great and the staff wonderful. Very safety minded operation which is always a PLUS!! They offer you coffee and water while your waiting for the safety briefing. Book this. You won't regret it!!
Took my two kids (age 11 and 15) on a 2-hour tour. The first thing to note was the professionalism of the pilot and the quality of the aircraft. Both were excellent. The helicopter offers excellent views no matter what seat you get. The layout is 3 and 4 which means 2 people get a front row seat with the pilot. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the flight was smooth. The highlight was stopping at the base of a 900 foot waterfall and where we could exit and walk about. All in all, this was a must do experience and one we will not forget.
Our helicopter tour on Blue Hawaiian Helicopters was very enjoyable and well-run. Despite the rainy weather, we saw a lot, including molten lava breaking through the hardened lava and some beautiful waterfalls. We also learned a lot about how the volcanoes have shaped the island from Jeremy, our helicopter pilot, who handled the rather windy flying with ease.
After days of bad weather with no flights, our 1PM flight was approaching and it was still raining. We had to check in, weigh, and get the safety briefing and wait out till 1PM, just like helicopter tour companies do where I live. Hoping the flight would be cancelled because who wants to pay to go flight seeing in crappy weather - right? At the last moment we were cleared to fly and were loaded in the ECO Star. Wow as this thing nice but I got one of the middle back seats. Turned out on the flight, the pilot made a loops around all the sights multiple times going in both directions so both sides of the helicopter could get to see everything. Thank you Jason. My view was not bad at all and my wife who was the most excited and planned the excursion was sitting next to the door and was happy with her view. Oh and our friends that we invited got assigned the front seats were on cloud 9. We did not know our seating assignments until we were getting loaded. Had we as a group known earlier, we would have asked to put my wife in the front but oh well. Ok the sites... You have to fly over quite a bit of residential, undeveloped land and old lave flows. The bubbling calderas you fly over are not up high in the park but rather down closer to the water. The view we got to see was very cool and there was lots of different things to see and be explained by Jason. We then followed the flow to the water where it was not flowing into the ocean so we did not see all the steam but oh well. We got to see where the roads were cut off and neighborhoods dealt with lava flows regularly in the past. Overall I say the money was worth it, even on a crappy day. What made it more special was going to Volcano National Park the day before learning all about volcanoes. It made the flight a whole lot better because you knew what you were looking at a lot of the time. I had no idea there was so many different things about volcanoes. You do need to get there the full hour before your flight because of the lengthly processing and safety briefing.
My wife bought me this trip as a surprise shore excursion while on a Celebrity cruise. My first time in a chopper but the staff at Blue Hawaii went through all the safety info before we got out to the pad to re-assure us. I got the plum seat next to our pilot Esther who did a great job to guide us through the tour. Headsets and mikes provided so you can communicate easily. The trip coincided with recently increased volcanic activity in the south of the island so we headed there first to see recent lava flows before a trip around the active vent crater with the smell of sulfur in the air. Very dramatic stuff! Then on to view beatiful falls near Hilo. All in all, a great trip!
Family of four just had an awesome tour with our guide and pilot Kory on June 9th. We were able to see the lava spewing and lava flow from the volcano. The water is beautiful! Also saw amazing waterfalls near Hilo. Everyone is very nice and professional from check in to finish. We enjoyed our tour very much!
It's a fantastic activity and a must do. The pilot was super - took pains to brave the weather, safely, to show lava flows and then the coastline and the waterfall-side landing for a break was absolutely fabulous. Completely worth the time and money. The only thing is the seating is on weight distribution basis so if you're modestly heavy, you may get the front side seat which is fantastic! Although, everyone does get to see most things ...just that the window side in front gives a wider view of things.
We had a safe and relaxing flight to see nature in action. Our pilot demonstrated his commitment to our safety and our enjoyment throughout the flight. He worked hard around VOG and clouds to get as the best views of the erupting volcano and later the towering water falls along the Kohala Coast. The ground staff at the Blue Hawaiian helicopters were friendly and efficient. The whole operation is a class outfit. It is a little spendy but we think we got every dollars worth of experience. Try it you'll like it.
During our visit fissure 8 was pouring out lava with a stream all the way to the ocean. First off if you weigh anything near 260 pounds with your sandals on be prepared to pay 1.5 times the normal rate even if you are a pound over. And yes they do weigh you. If you signed up in advance and took advantage of the discount for doing so, you will not get the discount on the extra half you need to pay at the time of weigh in, so eat lightly if you are near 260, this cost me an additional $200. Oh but no one sat next to me on the helicopter. Now on to the flight. There is a mandatory safe video before you get into the helicopter. The team is very professional and safety oriented. We took off and were soon near fissure 8 where the pilot give us a very clear description of what was happening and made sure to follow a path out of the smoke but so that everybody got a great view out of their window. Very good music to give atmosphere to the ride. We made passes to see the fissure and the area where the lava is entering the ocean. The falls were interesting but not the reason we took the tour. Back at the airport we purchased the USB with our flight on it.
Went on a helicopter tour for the first time with our family, hoping to see some of the volcano activity. We were not disappointed!. Crazy! Great pilot (Corey) and great time.
This was a fun way to see the Lava! They defiantly make sure that everyone gets to see the lava. It is also interesting to see how much has been destroyed from the flow of the lava.
