Well worth the money and a great experience. We actually did this as our other plans fell through and was so glad they did. Saw the whole island and got to take it all in, pilot was ex-military, knowledgable and fun. Seated 6 and you are put into a seat based on weight distribution so I was lucky to get the front seat.
We went in a 7 person helicopter with pilot Julie--what a personality and what a grasp of what it takes to be a good guide. The tour was beautiful..sometimes a bit scary like when she went directly into the crevice of a waterfall for an up close beautiful view. There were two pilots along on our trip and they both complimented her plotting skills. We were lucky to see whales breaching, lots of baby whales. Would definitely recommend. I think it was around $300 for my husband and me, but definitely a once I a lifetime experience. Only part I didn't like was having to hang around too long after the trip to get back too our hotel. By the way, they pick up and drop off at the hotels in a shuttle.
While pricey, this was a worthwhile experience and the highlight of our teenage kids' trip to Hawaii. Given that you can't get close to see the active Kilauea volcano and ocean flow any other way, this was a great experience for all. It was a bummer to be in the middle back seat of the Eco-Star copter (which holds 7 guests), but our pilot did his best to make sure everyone had a view of all major sights and to engage everyone on the ride. It would have been better if he were more knowledgeable and talkative about the geology and history of the island, but we had a fun time during the 50-minute ride. Despite the light rain and clouds, he was able to make sure we had a good ride as we flew below the clouds most of the time. The $40 for the personalized tour video at the end was a bit of a rip-off, especially after paying $917 for 4 people. They should have made it $20 or complimentary.
Me and my partner did the two hour island spectacular which was amazing and really worth it. I would recommend this your to anyone and this was a good activity to do especially to see the lava and volcanos and waterfalls from the sky. Truly awesome! The company offers a landing at a waterfall which costs an additional $150 and is definitely NOT worth it. It's just a money maker for the company and makes it sound worth it but it really isn't so don't be fooled! I don't see why the regular tour won't include this already given you have already paid close to $470 per person for the big island spectacular. I would say it is not worth it - all you do is land at the foot of a random waterfall and get out for 15-20 mins although there is nothing to do and any photos you can take you can pretty much just take from the aircraft without the landing bit saving you the money. BUT what was DISAPPONTING was that in order to do the waterfall landing, everyone in the helicopter has to say yes and want to do it (I.e the company want $150 from everyone on board) so if anyone says no then the those who want to pay the extra will miss out and the waterfall landing will not happen. Unfortunately myself and my partner were on board with two other couples who were friends and already wanted to do the waterfall landing. However the company did not notify me or the partner beforehand (at this point we didn't even know about the landing) and only once airborn and sat next to everyone in the helicopter did the pilot mention the above to us. We felt pressured into doing something we didn't want to and not let people down on their holiday so we went with it and paid the extra $150. This was either poor management and organisation / a pure profit making mindset at blue Hawaiian that forced us into this situation. After already paying over $900 in total to be basically told you have to pay an extra $300 was out of order and left a sour taste on the trip. The company were safe and helicopter was relatively new and comfortable. I don't know what other people experienced with other helicopter flying companies (worth checking out) but if you end up going with blue Hawaiian helicopters then make sure you clearly state up front you don't want to do the landing!!!
My husband's family and I went on the early morning helicopter tour of the big island and that early wake-up time was well worth it. It was the perfect day to view the Big Island from above and we saw so many things we would not have experienced otherwise during our short stay. An active volcano with smoke billowing out and two eyes from the hot magma, lava flowing into the ocean and releasing steam, centuries of old lava dried and leaving it's mark on the island. Valleys and so many beautiful waterfalls! It was truly a spectacular start to our trip! Our pilot Greg was so funny, he answered all of our questions and he made our trip even more memorable! The one regrettable problem from our ride was that malfunction of our on-board video camera that recorded our specific trip with videos of the views we saw as well. We purchased it, but when we came back to retrieve our video an hour later, we were told that our file was corrupt and not able to be copied to the USB. We were given the generic video which is better than nothing, it is just unfortunate that this happened. Overall, highly recommend that you take this helicopter tour! But I would caution you to take your own photos and videos in the event that the on board video does not work.
This was a great tour and the view are beautiful as the ride takes you from Wakiki to the North Shore then across to Pearl Harbor. Lovely sighting of the USS Arizona Memorial and USS Missouri.
Amazing, I intend fully to do this tour on all the hawaiian islands. If you do it at the start of your trip you get a really good idea of what you want to do on the island.
This was my first helicopter tour ever and what a beautiful experience it was. We threw expense to the wind and decided to take this once in a lifetime adventure. Though it was short (1 hour), it was well worth it to get a totally awesome aerial view of the entire island. From the many canyons and waterfalls, Na Pali Coast to Hanalei Bay, I couldn't have soaked in so much scenery any other way. The Blue Hawaiian helicopters are top of the line and very comfortable. My seat was by a window so my view could not have been any more spectacular. I was a little concerned about getting a middle seat in the back row, but my husband assured me that his view point was just as spectacular. I know other companies tout their no door adventures, but personally I preferred the closed door one and not having to worry about temperature/wind control and whether I wore the right attire. Do wear dark clothing as instructed for picture taking will come out better. Blue Hawaiian does provide a flash drive of your specific tour for a nominal fee, but there is no reason why you can't take all the pictures that you want to.
The staff was laser focused on safety, which was a great comfort to my wife who was a bit nervous about our first helicopter ride (once we got passed the receptionists ill-conceived attempt at humor about it being a sky-diving excursion when we checked-in). The helicopter was a bit cramped, but had reasonably comfortable seats and was air-conditioned. The staff might the entry and exit painless. But this 50 minute helicopter tour is all about the views. You won't see many of the spectacular sights in Kauai unless you go by copter or you are prepared for a strenuous eight-hour hike. The pilot was very knowledgable and friendly which added to the trip. I could have done without the some-times cheesy music, but the fabulous views overwhelmed any detraction from it. Be prepared to pay more than $200 per person though.
I had never been in a helicopter before so i was rather nervous about this trip. My hot air ballon experience in Queensland didn't go so well sothis was a biggy for me. Marty the pilot made us feel very secure and before he could say Aloha we were up, up and away. Driving a round Kauai is a beautiful place, however from the air it's simply amazing! We flew over every beach and visited up close the canyons and craters. Words fail me to describe the awesome sites you will see. Definatley worth the experience. Happyily I didn't need the comfort bag! Thanks Marty
Best way to see Kauai. The one hour tour showed us an aerial view of the whole island. The Napali Coast and waterfalls were awesome. We go super close to one of the falls. There were only two slightly negative things which was out of there control. The a large portion of the helicopter is glass which gives awesome views but also makes it really hot. Even my sandals were getting hot towards the end. Don't wear a bright colored shirt or you will have to put a black t-shirt on over yours (the color will reflect in photos) making you even more warm. Secondly if you get motion sickness at all take Dramamine. I thought I was going to be sick at the end other than that it was amazing.
We booked this tour through NCL for myself, my wife and my eldest daughter. The first part of the tour was the Earth part. We visited a number of locations with our Tour Guide Domi. He was an excellent guide, providing us a lot of details about the island, Hawaiians and the Aloha spirit. We ate lunch at the beach and sang songs and learned a hula. The second part of the tour was a helicopter tour of waimea canyon with Blue Hawaiian tours. We had Greg as our pilot and we had a great time seeing the canyon and the coastline. I highly recommend this tour.
Took the Big Island Spectacular Tour (including the optional waterfall landing) with my wife and 8-year old daughter and it was amazing. Our pilot Jason was friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining. We had a great view as we flew by the volcanos and over the area where the lava is currently meeting the ocean. We had a brief stop in Hilo where we were able to clean up a bit and then headed north to the landing by the waterfall. Would not hesitate to recommend Blue Hawaiian or this tour!
It's hard to spend the money, but Hawaii is generally a once in a lifetime experience...just do it. Pilot was professional and knowledgeable about the area and interacted well with the passengers. We all felt very safe and saw areas not accessible by any other means.
I didn't expecn much of this tour as I'm grequent aircraft passenger, but this experience was completely different and completely amazing! First, the flight went so smooth, we didn't even feel how we took off! Yes, we were aware that heli is equipped with some engine stability system (or smth like that), but still we expected some shaking while taking off. And we even didn't feel it) Second, my bf doesn't like to fly at all, he afraids of take-offs a little (or more than little). But in this case he felt soooo good and calm, that he could enjoy whole the jorney till the very end) Third: in our case we didn't get to see the waterfall in the mountains due to windy weather. But God, we saw soooo many beautiful things, that no fall was absolutely ok! Beautiful beaches, curvy waves, white yachts in a deep turquoise waters, fluffy mountain tops, geometrically correct slopes, some signs of humans civilization that is so considerate and caring to stunning local nature. It was really exciting to see and recognize the places we hiked every day within 2 weeks from an altitude! We both loved it! Though the tour is a bit expensive for us, and if not my bf, I wouldn't attend it, but in the end we're so impressed! And we still are)
