Big Island Spectacular tour on Eco-Star worth every penny!
I'm way overdue in posting this review. I guess that's what happens when you leave the oasis that is Kona and return to every day life. I first took a Blue Hawaiian tour two years ago while on a trip to Kona, Hawaii. It was simply spectacular. The tour was to Koala Falls, which were magnificent. I was really nervous, never having been in a helicopter, but the safety demonstration and confidence of the pilot quickly put me at ease. As soon as we started lifting off the ground I was in LOVE with it and knew I would do it again. This year, we booked on Blue Hawaiian again, and it was just as incredible for very different reasons... The weather was not great during our trip. Tours the previous day had been cancelled due to bad weather. Our tour was not cancelled, but we were given the heads up that if something changed while we were in the air, we would return to basecamp. Well... the winds shifted and the tour was cancelled while we were in flight. Our pilot, Tom, was super cool about it, explained the situation and started to turn the chopper. Then we saw the most magnificent thing--a pod of humpback whales, 7 of them--swimming in the ocean. One was swimming upside down (you could see the silver under-fins) and others were breaching the water. I was so excited I didn't even realize my camera lens was touching the window, which made the images blurry. That said, the memory of it will remain in my mind's eye forever... Bonus points to Tom and his sense of humor... as we were flying back he put on the theme to "Top Gun" followed by "Ride of the Valkyries" (Apocalypse Now). We laughed all the way back to the helipad.
This is the best way to see the Big Island. We flew in an Eco-Star helicopter and our pilot, Toshi, was amazing. From the volcanoes, waterfalls and seeing whales breaching... Wow! We've been to the Big Island before but have never seen it like this. Highly recommend Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour!
The flight over the big island was absolutely breathtaking! I had Scott as the pilot and he was very knowledgeable and really nice! He was willing to answer any questions and encouraged the passengers to have a pleasant conversation during the flight. It was truly unforgettable and a must if you visit the big island
We were glad to have booked our helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian. Their helicopters are modern, and our pilot, Tom, was awesome. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the Kohala Coast.
Totally sweet ride! The 2 hour tour is worth the $$$ if your lucky to have a clear day!
I'd recommend this tour. The big island has so much to offer but how can you bring it all in and not spend your time driving for a solid week? Simple answer is to book the 2 hour helicopter tour. Let's forget the beauty for a second and know you'll be getting a verbal history lesson on the island's people, villages and creation. They hook you up with head phones and a microphone, so ask away. Your pilot will answer or at least double talk his way through your questions regarding the island. What I saw and wanted see first of all was the hot lava. I'm not going to bullshit you it looked like a bunch of steam coming out of black rocks. I was good with that because that was as close to molten lava as I was going to get. Checked flying over active volcano off my bucket list. The big surprise was seeing Hilo and the surrounding area by air. We had driven into Hilo a couple days earlier and I thought the town was a dump, other than our stop at Akaka Falls. I guess we didn't know where to go because there are waterfalls and lush green valleys everywhere, as far as the eye could see. The trip is going to cost you some serious jack but when are you ever going to see nature from this perspective?
Fantastic. Worth every penny ... They run a tight well oiled business. Once we took off I became VERY anxious (claustrophobic).. Our pilot Brandt out me at ease and knocked it out of the park with a safe and exciting ride ... Highly recommend
This was the most awesome helicopter tour I've been on. You get to see beautiful water falls, flowing lava, gorgeous coastline, majestic mountains, fantastic foliage, and THE INSIDE OF A VOLCANO!!! Definitely worth the money if it's in your budget. Can't wait to do it again.
Scott gave us a fabulous tour of the big island. We had such a great time and definitely was the best adventure of our honeymoon!
Excellent!!! Had a blast on the tour and would definitely recommend if your on the Kona side of the island.
This was so worth the money. I can't compare to other similar tours, but I found the staff friendly and professional. Toshi, our pilot and guide, could not have been more charming and he was genuinely excited to share some of his favorite aerial spots with us. We saw lava and more waterfalls than I could count. My fave part was flying over the Saddle road area. I drove the road later and would never have known it was the same place. Go in the morning as the clouds thicken during the day and may obscure vision.
Yesterday my boyfriend, boyfriend's father, and I went on a 2 hour tour of Kona through Blue Hawaiian Helicopters and had a blast! Sean/Shawn was our pilot and was very friendly and knew the island well. More than that, he was a fantastic pilot! My boyfriend's father rides in helicopters often for his job and noticed that Shawn had a very smooth handle on the helicopter. We began by flying to a volcano and we were able to see it's activity. It was an 8/10 (according to Shawn) so we did about 15 circles of it. He paid close attention to make sure that everyone in the helicopter could see it by switching directions which we all appreciated. Then, we went all over the green side of the island and over the ocean. We saw 400 foot waterfalls and Shawn manipulated us SO close to them. One thing I thought was awesome that was when we were in the helicopter we saw other helicopter tours around us and none of them spent the time we did at the attractions and others weren't as close to the action as we were! I would absolutely recommend the 2 hour tour- great way to see the entire island! The only feedback I have for the company is that they jipped us 20 minutes in the tour- I was up front and I saw Shawn set the timer when we took off and when we got back it was at 1:40. Boo! I loved my flight and would have appreciated the extra 20 minutes. Still great though.
Just do it! Well worth the investment in fun and discovery. Our pilot John and the entire flight crew and staff were excellent. The view from above was awesome and the ride was safe and sound. We were staying in Hilo and for some reason we booked our flight out of the West side of the island which was odd, but that was our fault. Get the CD Video of your flight and take lots of pictures. Directions to the heliport is a little difficult but what do you expect... it's at the edge of desert and lava field and some resorts. Have fun!
Darren took us on the most amazing bucket list trip of my life, everything was perfect. We drove over from the hotel and they set us up with all our safety gear and off we went. We saw the volcano actively shedding a wave after a wave. Darren took us around for multiple views so everyone could see it. It was stunning. He had a great knowledge of the island and told wonderful stories. He was lots of fun. Next over to the coast and a beautiful rainbow, bright as could be appeared. Then up the coast, Such beauty on the smooth helicopter ride. A highlight of the ride was the touchdown, We touched down in front of this amazing waterfall. He let us get out and take pictures, He even brought a Santa hat so we could make Christmas Cards if we wanted. Thank You Darren and Blue Hawaiian. Happy Holidays
