Took morning helicopter tour on Sat 5/24/14. Morning seems like the time to go since there was not a lot of helcopter traffic. The staff was friendly preparing explanations and safety videos. Pilot Greg was incredible and friendly. Provided an interactive experience. Explained a lot. Real nice guy. Helicopter was modern and clean. Felt safe the entire time. Views were incredible. Were told in advance that could not guarantee activity but saw soem lave flow. Had a great time.
We took an afternoon flight with Ethan, our pilot, out of Hilo. Having done our research, we knew not to expect to see flowing lava. We did however see bubbling bits of lava, great waterfalls and flew into a rainbow. My only complaint was that many of the other helicopters were flying lower than ours which would have been great for photos and the view in general. The customer service was top-notch. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and they were able to make it a memorable experience by getting us into the front seats. Very friendly on the phone and in person.
Staff was friendly and informative. Our pilot Colleen was excellent. Had pointers about things to do along with information about the area. Made sure to swing around to both sides of the volcano and other spots to be sure every one got a good view. We did a helicopter tour of Maui with the same company years ago and definitely they were worth the the time and money.
Very friendly stuff . On time !! Very friendly pilot ! What an experience !!you really get to see the lava from top ! The volcano is active !!!
Awesome experience. Seeing the volcano from the helicopter was well worth the price. Our pilot Jeremy was great.
First trip on an helicopter and we loved the flight, we will do others in the future. we got Jeremy as pilot and he was great, fun and very knowledgeable . I was near the left window and I had the greater view possible. Recommanded it to anyone.
First trip on a helicopter. John was our pilot was awesome. Felt safe and secure with him. He was an pilot for the armed forces. He told us about every bit of the Big Island of Hawaii. The flight was smooth and comfortable. Everyone had a great view. This is something everyone should do when visiting the Islands. Worth the money! Also wanted to mention our shuttle drive Maryland was great too!!!!
My wife and I have now had at least 6 flights in various helicopters over some magnificent places. Two things are always the same, it never gets old and it always gives you a new perspective. We took two flights with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters , one on the Big Island over the Volcano and one on Kauai, the Eco Adventure. It goes without saying that the scenery was breathtaking. On both occasions the pilots were extremely professional and did their very best to please. They showed enthusiasm for what they were doing and some nice personal touches like their own soundtrack for the flight. On our Kauai flight we were scheduled to fly at 10.00am but everything was covered in cloud. Fortunately we were able to reschedule for a 2.00pm flight which went very well. This process was handled in a friendly and professional manner. All in all I think everyone from the ground stuff to the pilots did a great job. I would strongly recommend to anyone, if you get the chance take a helicopter flight at least once in your life and if you are going to take one, Blue Hawaiian are as good as any I have been with!
My kids (7 and 12), my husband and I went on a helicopter ride over the volcanoes and waterfalls on Father's Day. Coleen was our pilot. We had an amazing experience. The check in process was super easy, and the safety talk was useful. My daughter and I were somewhat nervous on our first helicopter ride, but the dear quickly dissipated as we got to the helicopter and started talking with Coleen. My 12-year old daughter and I sat up front with her, and she could tell my daughter was a little timid. She did a fantastic job talking to my daughter and keeping her engaged. She was truly awesome. We had a beautiful day with sunny blue skies. We flew over the volcano, and Coleen did a great job of pointing things out and telling us history the area and the lava flows. We were able to see some of the lava flowing. Then we went to see the waterfalls which were beautiful. We rode in the EcoStar, which I would highly recommend. Everyone had a good view/seat, and there was plenty of room. It's not bench seating so everyone has their own seat, too. Lots of windows. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone looking for a helicopter ride. Will definitely come back!
The flight was awesome and our pilot was informative and accommodating. The views of the volcano and valleys with waterfalls were spectacular! I was concerned I would get motion sickness as this was my first time on a helicopter. I didn't get sick at all...don't hesitate to experience the incredible views! My only advice would be to wear dark clothes...including long pants and a long shirt. Even though I wore black, my shirt was sleeveless and it did cause a reflection in my pictures.
My first time up in a helicopter & can't wait to do it again! Our pilot, Eric, was real nice & gave us plenty of info on the areas we flew over & was patient in answering our questions. He made sure everyone had an opportunity to get some good pics of lava flowing & waterfalls. A definite adventure to take if you don't do anything else! Wonderful!
Thank You all and especially thank You scott! Perfect pilot, perfect guide and great experience! Big island is very very beautiful
I was intimidated by the price of these tours - $500 for the 2 hour tour from Waikoloa and $225 for the 1 hour tour from Hilo. We went for the cheaper tour and drove to Hilo instead - I'm so glad we did this. It was a beautiful drive on the north side of the island and then such a treat to get in the helicopter. I think an hour was perfect - more would have been too much in my opinion. Scott was our pilot - he was a delight. Really chatty and informative - he found out what we were all interested in and then expanded on those topics. He was wildly passionate about volcanoes and the Big Island in general. One of the smoothest flights I have ever had! Last time I was in a helicopter, I was sick the whole time. This trip was smooth and safe and really wonderful - pilot Scott completely put me at ease and we all had such a wonderful time.
We took the Big Island Spectacular flight with Noah on 9/17 in the Eco-Star. I, personally, was terrified about the trip, and even shed a few tears upon boarding. Noah made us all feel very comfortable. I suffer from motion sickness, so took Dramamine before flying. It seemed that we picked a good day for flying, because the skies were mostly clear (even with a 2:30pm departure time, which were were worried about) and the flight smooth. The only times I felt slightly sick were when we circled around the crater so that everyone could get a good view of the lava. I did ask for a front seat, but due to the seating being allocated by a computer by weight, I was sitting in the back, but could still see out in front of me and to the sides. Like someone else has previously said in a review here on T.A. - "fatties in the back" - the two lightest people on our flight were given the 2 front seats. The price tag seems steep, but it was totally worth it, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I thought 2 hours would be a long time, but with the 10-minute stopover in Hilo to refuel (where you can also use the restroom and pick up a bottle of water) it was do-able. The highlights were seeing the bright red molten lava erupting from the volcano, and the second part of the flight after we left Hilo and flew through wonderful valleys with waterfalls. You are only allowed to take a water bottle, sunglasses & camera (no case) on the helicopter - they will store your handbag/backpack for you until your return. Add this to your "MUST DO" list for the Big Island!
We went as a group of four on the two hour Big Island helicopter tour. As full time Maui residents, I was not stoked to participate in that adventure but we were with dear friends visiting from Texas so I went along for the ride. I cannot convey deeply enough how much we enjoyed the ride. The Big Island is unseeable from any other angle. So much of the land looks like cake batter. Kilauea was going off and we could see the molten lava. The topography of the island is truly stunning. Our pilot, John who had only been on the Big Island for a short time (so maybe he needed a little brushing up regarding the flora and fauna of Hawaii), was beyond excellent as a pilot. He was entertaining and engaging while also imparting his professional piloting (former military-Iraq). Every turn was smooth and graceful. Absolutely no queasiness. His form was perfect. The entire ride was like floating on a cloud. When we exited the helicopter, our friend that was absolutely terrified to go on this ride said these words (and she is hard to impress)..."The Grandest thing I have ever done". Hint: Go for the early morning ride....you want to see the island before the clouds get socked in.
