Our family of four booked the 2 hour Island Spectacular flight on the new eco helicopters. The flight was extremely smooth and the views were awesome. We were very lucky to see lava flowing which does not happen every day. The views into the volcano were an unforgettable experience which can only be seen from a helicopter. The coastal flight north of Hilo showed us valleys and gorges which are not accessible any other way except than by air. The many flowing waterfalls were also an amazing sight. All in all, we felt privileged to see parts of the big island not accessible in any other way. This alone made the flight a 'must do'. Yes, it is expensive but so worth it. Treat yourself...you won't be disappointed.
Most people will make one trip to the Big Island during a lifetime. So if you are going to splurge on one thing while you are there, this is it. Book the Big Island Spectacular in the state-of-the-art EcoStar helicopter. And book it early during you visit so you can get an early glimpse of the places you plan to visit later. Yes, it will cost $500 a person, but it is worth every penny. I was very impressed at how the company operates. They stay on schedule, safety is their first concern, and the staff is friendly and polite. Our pilot, Scott, was terrific. He gave a great narration during the flight, answered questions, and was very friendly and knowledgeable. You will fly from Waikoloa to the volcanoes, then to Hilo (and land there if you need to use the restroom facilities), then to the Hamakua Coast, then Waimea Valley, and then back to Waikoloa. It is a great experience that you will remember for the rest of your life (or regret for the rest of your life if you don't go). The helicopter is equipped with several video cameras, and you can buy a DVD of your flight after you land. Don't let that stop you from taking your own camcorder and recording your own video clips. The cameras in the helicopter provide mediocre to average quality, but I still recommend buying the DVD because it has the pilot's narration. But for video quality, you will do a better job with your own equipment.
Yeah, this is an expensive activity, but well worth every penny. Our pilot Noah isn't a native Hawaiian, but he knew his history, geography, geology, and how to fly! We did the Big Island Spectacular, which gives you 90% of the island covered. We were fortunate to have a very active day with Kilaeau's eruption, so we spent way more time than normal over the crater. Noah didn't scrimp on the waterfalls on the Hamakua Coast, and got us some killer photo opps. We've done multiple helo tours, and Blue Hawaiian is the best.
Ride the Eco star and take the Big Circle tour. It's totally worth the money. This was our second time on Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. The first trip was years ago. It was amazing to see how the island had changed with new lava creations. Great touchdown by John our pilot. He was very knowledgeable and interesting. His stories and insights were exceptional. We were able to see Kilauea from the air as it spewed out an enormous amount of lava. The waterfalls were breathtaking. If you want to grasp the enormity of the island, you must take this tour.
If you are hesitating about spending the extra for the 2 hour trip - stop hesitating and do it! Unbelievable experience and scenery, all incredibly well described by our pilot, Steve. Any initial nerves were quickly dispelled with Steve running through his impressive resume and he really made the trip even better - making sure everyone had a great view of the countless jaw dropping vistas and features. The 2 hours took in the Kilauea caldera, the current eruptions and lava flow, the Hamakua coast and rainforest, dolphin pod searching and of course the stunning waterfalls and valleys of the north east. Steve was very patient answering the 'varied' questions of our 6 and 8 year old who had a fantastic experience. Overall an experience well worth the money and a must-do of the big island.
We booked a helicopter tour in Kona since our cruise ship stopped here for a day.Our Flight in Hilo on the previous day got cancelled due to bad weather and at first we were quite sad about this. So we decided to give it another try next day. This flight didn`t just get us around the volcano area but also around the coast and the beautiful valleys. Flight duration was about 2 hours (compared to the flight in Hilo ,which lasts about 45 minutes) I can honestly say that this was an experience of our lifetime! We booked the more luxurious Eco Star Helicopter which was very spacious and provided an excellent visibility on every seat. The rear seats were in a slightly higher psosition than the front ones. Our pilot Toshi is an excellent and safe pilot and his comments were just as informative as entertaining. Also the choice of music fitted exactly to the Nature (like "Highway to the danger zone" above the Craters or beautiful songs of Enya entering the most beautiful valleys with magnificent waterfalls) If you are on Big Island be sure not to miss this experience!! We regret not a single dollar spent for this flight!
Scheduled a helicopter flight and it rained enough to cancel the flight. Blue Hawaiian rescheduled without a hassle and offered to refund if I couldn't reschedule. I was able to reschedule and had a great time. The company is very safety oriented and took care to make sure everyone knew what to do and what to expect. I enjoyed the tour and appreciated the commentary by Mark, our pilot, explaining what we were seeing.
The Circle of Fire and Waterfalls tour was excellent. Our pilot, Greg, was attentive to each of the guests ensuring that everyone had as good a view as possible. His explanations and descriptions enhanced the trip. We had wonderful weather and thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience. Susan G
It was our first time in a helicopter and the pilot, Greg has exceeded in excellence. I really didn't understand the unhappy people of the reviews... Congrats Blues!!
This was our first flight in a helicopter but frankly it was like being in a very agile light aircraft. Overall it was an excellent experience! Lava wasn't really flowing in a big way but it's still very dramatic. We really enjoyed the flight and our pilot's informative commentary, answers to questions and willingness to go round again to get a better look at whatever was of particular interest. Ground crew, etc., were all very professional. Mahalo!!
We took our three children on the ring of fire helicopter tour and loved it! On our 50 minute tour we saw lots of lava rock, the ocean, brush fires from the lava flow, and the smoking volcano. There wasn't too much red flowing lava to see but it was still worth the trip. Our helicopter pilot, Scott, did a wonderful job narrating the tour and kept everyone engaged. The ride was very smooth and Scott was very good about giving everyone a good view from both sides of the helicopter. He was a very good helicopter pilot and was very entertaining. We are so glad we did this tour. It was the highlight of our trip to Hawaii!
We did Ring of Fire tour ... Greg our pilot did an amazing job!! Ensured everyone had a great viewing experience. Ground grew had great customer service
Our pilot Greg did a great job flying us and talking about all that we were seeing. The company is very safety oriented with a strong ground crew. We flew on the Echo-Star which provided outstanding visibility and a comfortable flight. The pilot went out of his way to make sure everyone had great views of the volcano and waterfalls. I highly recommend this trip!
Took this flight over Volcanoes National Park through Carnival shore tours. What to expect and safety instructions were narrated on a video during the shuttle bus ride. Pilot did a great job of keeping the ride smooth, narrating and answering questions. Seeing the red glow of molten lava against the black of cooled lava from the air was amazing. He did several passes over everything we saw to make sure you could get a good view no matter where you were seated. Also flew over waterfalls in the Hilo area that are privately owned so can only be seen from the air. Highly recommend this tour.
We first came to Hilo, when our children were young in the mid 1970's. Later we could drive from Kilauea near the lava tubes all the way down the Chain of Craters Road to Kalapana Beach. Much of what we could drive on and the scenery we passed is now long gone, as Pele extended her home with 30 years of eruptions. Blue Hawaii is a wonderful helicopter service. We have flown them before on Kuaui. And, on this day we had great weather. Our target for the trip was to fly near the volcano and over the lava fields. While there were no eruptions or obviously glowing flows, we did spot a number of trees/bush on fire from the lava. We have done helicopter flights in Hawaii and Alaska and loved each one. There are very unique views that you can only achieve by flying on a helicopter. If you want one of those unique travel experiences try a helicopter - at least once.
