We did the 2-hour Big Island Spectacular in the A Star. We saw breathtaking views of the volcano, waterfalls, and the coastline. Our pilot, Steve, told great stories and had a fun personality. This experience may not be for you if you're claustrophobic, as you're squished in tightly. You're able to purchase a DVD of your actual flight. Unfortunately, only half of our flight got recorded, but they gave us that for free. I'd highly recommend this experience if you're willing to spend the money.
My husband and I took this trip on our second day in Hawaii. My husband was a little nervous about flying but it turned out great! Our guide was very knowledgeable and we were even able to take photos with the helicopter because we were the last flight of the day. We took the Kona waterfall tour and it was beautiful. If we were to do it again, I would do the volcano tour, I hear it is incredible. I would recommend this company to anyone wanting to see The Big Island from the sky!
We did the 2 hour Big Island Spectacular in the EchoStar which was absolutely the highlight of our 40th anniversary trip! Our pilot Shane placed my wife on a window and me in a middle seat which seemed a bummer at first but I was able to see fine. Shane was absolutely wonderful answering questions and sharing Big Island info throughout our trip. The trip began with a flight to the Kilauea volcano, which I thought would be the highlight. Not so! Lots of pilot and passengers chatter during this part. The second part of the trip, past Hilo, was back along the north coastline to view the Big Island's numerous and very beautiful waterfalls. This was absolutely breathtaking! So much so that there was literally no passenger talking (only Shane) during this period, as we were spellbound. In fact, we'll pick up a framed photo to remember this part. Blue Hawaiian also offers a nice DVD of your trip to remember it by. If you miss this flight, you have not fully experienced the Big Island. Don't miss it!
It is the tail end of our visit on the Big Island and we definitely ended our trip with a bang! Despite some reviews of their experience being unpleasant, we went with blue hawaiian and were extremely pleased with that decision. Some people will complain if the weather doesn't go there way, but blue hawaiian did it all right. Very friendly and efficient service, our pilot, Toshi, was engaging and informative, the aircraft was clean and in fantastic condition, and most of all the views were fantastic. It rained on us in some areas but that is all part of being in Hawaii. We saw lots of waterfalls that my pictures just don't do justice. The service: check in was quick and easy, safety briefing was simple and easy to follow, lemon water provided, the staff straps you in, cold moist towel provided after landing. I myself am a pilot and overall I appreciated the friendliness, professionalism, and comfort that was provided to make that tour as great as it was. Worth the price for the Eco-star if anyone was wondering.
Very professional and friendly staff. Not much lava around at moment so don't expect to see any big lava flows. The staff ask you to wait on the tarmac in the sun for approx 15-20 mins (before you board helicopter) and not allowed to wear a hat so make sure you wear sunscreen if you have pale skin. I got quite burnt on my neck and legs and would have put more sunscreen had I known. There was even a 12 month old baby walking around with no hat on so she would be very burnt! Otherwise, maybe Blue Helicopter can erect a small tent for customers to stand under while waiting? Overall a fun ride and definitely worth it :-)
This is something I have always wanted to do and I am so glad I did. I flew with my husband and children aged 7 and 10 which all just loved it. Very professional and well organised, I could not fault any of the staff they were all very helpful and friendly. The flight plan was good with a mix of lava fields and waterfalls at the end. It was the only way we could have seen any lava. We did not see much just glimpses but that kept me very happy. Well done to blue Hawaiian if you are thinking about going on a flight just do it. Yes expensive but worth it.
Jeremy (our pilot) was great, with a perfect selection of music to suit the scenery. Thanks for a really good experience. I would have liked to see just a little more lava, but I know you can't make it like snow ;)
Great ride. Saw lots of sites and hot lava. Pilot was not as knowledgable as other viewers commented. He couldn't answer questions about area or volcano. Would do again absolutely just would ask for different pilot.
We have an Autistic son whose main focus in life is Helicopters. He watches helicopter videos on YouTube. He sleeps with a helicopter magazine under his pillow. He has hundreds of helicopter toys all over the house……I could go on and on, but the “easy version” is: he eats, sleeps and breathes helicopters. However, arranging and paying for an actual helicopter ride where we live is not the most cost effective thing in the world. However, as I am sure you can imagine, the market in Hawaii is a little different and it’s a tad more feasible. We made the decision to make our son’s dream a reality while on vacation on The Big Island. Literally, this is his dream and naturally we wanted the “perfect” experience for our family’s first helicopter ride, so I did quite a bit of research. It seemed like most roads led to the same place and that place was Blue Hawaiian. Add to that, their heliport was very convenient for our stay in Waikoloa and it just made sense to go for a ride with them. After all the research and all the anticipation leading up to the “big day”, I don’t think there is any way that it could have been more perfect and there is certainly no possible way that Blue Hawaiian could have been more professional. The entire crew there was so spectacular from the moment we walked in the door to the moment we left. Every person that worked there seemed to be genuinely interested in making sure that we had a great experience, both on the ground and in the air. Our pilot for the ride was Shane and from my stand point, he was pure class with a great sense of humor. He also seemed to have this amazing ability to know when to talk about what we were seeing and when to not say anything at all. I am sure there a people out there that would love to have someone at the controls who can/will tell them every last detail about what they are seeing, the history of it, what it’s named and why it’s named that way, etc. Shane did quite a bit of that and we all really appreciated it very much when he did. However, I also really enjoyed the fact there were times we could go with radio silence and just take everything in and enjoy the beauty that was surrounding us. To everyone at Blue Hawaiian Helicopters: Thanks for a great experience, I’m sure we will see you again someday!
The wife really wanted to do this since the Big Island has the volcanic activity. We did the short tour (50 minute). PROS: A fully professional experience. I've never been on a helicopter tour of any kind before so either this is industry standard or BH is on top of their game. Nathan, our pilot, was great and answered everyone's questions. We saw lava as well as the aftermath of the last major eruption. At the end we flew by some waterfalls as well. The flight was unbelievably smooth. They play the Hawaii 5-0 theme on takeoff. Kid friendly. CONS: Pricey, but that is to be expected of course (~$200 per person, $270 if over 250lbs). The helicopter seats four in the back. That means that up to two people might have to be in the middle. I was by a window but if I had been in the middle in the back it would not have been as good of an experience as I enjoyed. You have to check in 45 minutes before your flight which they neglected to tell us. Luckily we arrived half an hour early on our own so no harm done. OVERALL: It is worth doing if it interests you. The longer tour might be a little much for people prone to motion sickness, but the 50 minute tour should be alright, just take some Dramamine first. Try to score a window or front seat if you can. Our ride was very smooth despite rainy weather.
My family and I had a wonderful experience with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. The staff was wonderful and everything was on time. The helicopters are state of the art and our pilot was fantastic. He explained everything in great detail and really let us see the lava flowing. If you want to really see the volcano use Blue Hawaiian.
We enjoyed our helicopter ride, our pilot Scott was great he remembered our names, put us at ease and was very knowledgeable. The advertising brochures showed lava flowing into the sea and lots of lava activity. This was not so. We felt we had been mislead and we were disappointed with what we saw.
Loved the experience! Even though it was raining, the view was spectacular! Our pilot Greg was very knowledgeable about the area and the history of the valleys, trees, culture, etc. My 4 and 5 year old loved it and loved talking into the microphone. The waterfalls! OMG, the waterfalls, I was speechless. The one think I didn't care for are the over the shoulder harness straps. They were way to tight and left a mark on my neck. Beautiful and breathtaking scenary, but not the most comfortable experience.
The views were amazing and breathtaking. Our pilot was friendly, knowledgeable and patient. Despite two flights back-to-back, he gave us an experience just as if it was his first flight of the day. He took his time to show us the volcanoes, searching for lava, because he knew we have neither seen a volcano nor lava in person. He also took us on several different views of the valleys and waterfalls. They had good safety procedures. We were scheduled on a 9am flight only to be informed that there was a technical problem and had to cancel the flight. This showed that safety is their number one priority. We were lucky to find another opening slot in the afternoon. Since, the location was quite a distance from the hotel, they offered complimentary shuttle service to and back from a nearby mall. The only set back was when we were informed that our flight had to be cancelled, there was no alternative slots offered to us. We had to ask if they could find us a slot. They did offer us a slot on other islands, but each island in the State of Hawaii is different. As we only had 2 nights on the Big Island and were departing the next day, we were lucky that they managed to find us a slot. Imagine if they didn't. It would be better if they allocate reserve flying hours each day to accommodate such incidences since they do not have spare helicopters in their fleet. This is to avoid disappointment among customers. Overall, the 2 hours flying time was an experience of a lifetime. The life video recording of our flight was also a great addition. Must try when visiting the Big Island.
When my wife and I decided to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon I insisted that we spend time on the big island because I wanted to see active volcanoes. Seeing them from an aerial perspective was breathtaking. What's more, the big island's thousands of waterfalls and amazing valleys were just simply amazing. If we hadn't done the helicopter tour these sites would have been impossible to see. Originally, my wife did not want to go on a helicopter tour out of fear for her life. At the last minute, our hotel concierge (of all people) convinced her to go. She felt perfectly safe the whole time, and we both felt like the experience was the highlight of our trip! We did the two hour tour with Toshi as our pilot and guide. He was so nice, funny, and knowledgeable. We were lucky that we got him as our pilot. If your going to spring for anything on your trip, it has to be a helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian!
