I went years ago and it was one of the most memorable vacation moments of my life. You can't beat the views of the mountains, waterfalls, and rest of the island, and our pilot was also entertaining. A trip I will never forget!
While in Maui we splurged and took a heli tour of the island with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. It was awesome. It was our first heli tour ever and it was so way cool!!!!!! Blue Hawaiian were professional, organized, and 100 % safety oriented. We loved it so much we have taken 3 more. We took Blue Hawaiian over Kaui and Liberty Helicopters over New York City and took a tour over St Augustin in Florida. There are several more holiday destinations we intend to 'heli tour' and it is all because of that first tour we took with Blue Hawaiian. We intend to return to the islands and when we do Blue Hawaiian will be our heli tour of choice.
We were staying on the West side of Maui, so we lined up the helicopter ride for our last day when we would be headed back to the airport. Obviously the helicopter ride was awesome, but Rick made the flight even better. He was very knowledgeable and personable.
We booked a ride on Blue Hawaiian the first day we arrived on Maui. Out concierge told us that the seats fill up fast. The weather forecast for the week wasn't great, but we got three seats (me, wife, friend) for the one hour full Maui island tour and were joined by two other vacationers. We chose to fly on the more expensive Eco-Star, which touted larger and more comfortable seats as well as 30% more viewing area. The afternoon of our trip was very windy (30+ mph), but the ride still went on. Make sure to allow enough time to get there as the heliport is right next to the airport. Our pilot's names was Glenda, a 23-year chopper pilot veteran/ 8 yrs on Maui, and she was amazing. She knew a ton about the island, but more importantly, was very calming to a friend that's a bit claustrophobic. Glenda took us all round the island from Kapalua to Hana, from desert to rainforest to the top of the Haleakala volcano. Aside from a few bouts of turbulence (3-4 in the entire hour), the ride was very smooth. We has a blast! We're glad we opted for the more expensive Eco-Star chopper, it was a very comfortable ride and you definitely want to see as much as you can while you're there. It's a pretty expensive, but a helicopter ride was on my bucket list and there is no better place to do it than Maui.
When I knew we were going to Maui everyone said go on a helicopter ride when you are in Maui. So I checked on TripAdvisor and Blue Hawaiian had the best reviews . It is definitely worth the extra money to do the Eco-Star helecopter. It is bigger and quieter than the other helicopter . We did the West Maui and Molokai. It was breathtaking and very smooth ride. The pilot was safe and professional we paid extra and purchased the DVD which shows everyone in the helicopter. Great quality DVD. Next time I think we will do the whole island because we stayed at the Fairmount Kea Lani and our tour didn't take us by there which would have been fun to see where we were staying. I would recommend doing this at the end of your trip so you can see where you visited by air. Also you get a discount if you book online a certain amount of days from the helecopter ride.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 45-minute helicopter ride. Blue Hawaiian is very professional and safety minded. Greg did a great job of telling us about the volcano, then took us over some beautiful waterfalls, then out over the water to see Humpback whales! Be sure to wear dark clothing per their website, but be aware that skin counts, too! I wore black shorts, but my legs and arms reflected in the window when I was taking pictures!
We just had an amazing flight with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters around the big island. The live volcanoes were incredible to see up close and the valley and waterfalls were truly nothing short of spectacular. Our pilot, Jason, was a wealth of knowledge. It was a mini course on Hawaiian geology, topography and culture to boot. We were lucky with weather and would definitely explore with them again on one of the other islands! Amazing day!!
I was terrified to get on a helicopter. Did it because Hubby wanted to so bad. It was spectacular! Smooth and comfortable and the scenery was spectacular! I would do it again in a heartbeat. I think our pilot's name was Chris. Thanks for the wonderful ride Chris and Blue Hawaiian!
The West Maui/Molokai tour is a great way to see the inaccessible seacliffs in the North Shore of Molokai and the valleys within West Maui. I took the noon tour and we lucked out with great weather. The trip starts from the Kahului heliport ($7 parking) which is somewhat confusing to find because the address they gave is not in googlemaps when I went (I think they now fixed it). The address linked here is incorrect - googlemap "Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Kahului" and it should take you there. I paid some extra to be in the front of their $3M ECO-Star helicopter and it was worth it. The pilot Rick was very knowledgeable and we were able to talk and ask questions while in flight. The tour first goes through the Wailuku side, with nice views of Kahukuloa Head. Saw a mom and baby humpback whale on the way to Molokai while crossing the channel! Molokai is truly the highlight ... the seacliffs were sheer and dramatic, with cascading waterfalls and deep valleys. The coral reef system was also awesome. We didn't go all the way to Kalaupapa unfortunately. Crossing the channel again, we saw many more humpback whales. Venturing close to Puu Kukui was also a highlight. The scenic vistas were impressive, though the trip somewhat feels choreographed (with appropriate background music). In a way this may be a good thing because they tried to capture the best sights consistently. The helicopter itself is very nice, though I longed for the doors-off option when I was in Volcanoes NP, since the window glare made it really difficult to take pictures. I purchased the video but beware it only comes in *.avi format and they couldn't convert it to *mp4. Check the file also before leaving - they gave me a video of some other group and had to wait another week by mail to get the correct one. Overall, this is a great way to get an overview of Molokai (now in my foot-travel checklist) and get intimate with the verdant valleys in the West Maui Forest Reserve. However, it is an expensive trip ($264) - they have to recoup the cost of the helicopters somehow.
Our first ever helicopter ride and tour took place yesterday and we were blown away. We took the West Maui and Molokai tour, it was absolutely spectacular ! Just seeing those incredibly deep valleys, the waterfalls, the jagged mountains, the coastline, the whales, sea turtles and mantra rays in the ocean form above was beyond our expectations. We had a great pilot who was very knowledgeable. I highly recommend Blue Hawaiian!
My family visited Hawaii at the end of February / beginning of March. We were staying on Maui but did an overnight trip to the big island primarily to see the volcano and thought that a helicopter tour would be the best way to get up close and personal. We were not disappointed! We did the "Circle of Fire Plus Waterfalls" tour and upgraded to the Ecostar helicopter for the added room and larger windows. First, the helicopters really are state of the art. I have been in a few helicopters and these are nice. Ample room and great windows for viewing. The pilot really knew what he was doing. He made sure that every viewpoint was visable to all passengers on board. He would circle it on left and right sides so everyone could see well and get pictures if they so desired. And finally, these guys are organized! Everything from the booking process to seat designation & boarding / unloading was organized and well thought out. This is not a cheap tour but if you can swing it, I would highly recommend it. For me, flying over an active volcano will be one memory that I will have forever!
I did it with my girl friend, we booked a star helicopter and trip was West Maui and Molokai. It was recommended by the staff and they told us that pilots also love this one. I don't regret :) first cool thing was that we get free upgrade to Eco Star wchich is much better helicopter, highly recomend to get this one because you get HD quality video from this one which is amazing!! from a star you get low quality video, so its worth to pay a lil bit more for the memories. The trip was amazing was saw so manny whales jumping from the ocean, mountains, waterfalls and beautifull valleys. It was amazing and the stuff was very nice, we bought the USB with our trip video whcih looks very cool and the quality is very good. This company was also a bit cheaper than the other ones.
My friend and I decided to splurge and go on a two hour Eco-Star heli tour of the Big Island. It was exciting and marvelous to see most of the Island in this way. We saw the active volcano, the dormant volcano, as well as the gorgeous Waimea Valley and waterfalls and eastern coastline. I highly recommend this to others as marvelous experience as well as an superb way to grasp the size and majesty of the Big Island.
This is a must do if your in Honolulu Seriously entertaining and worth the time and expense. Would recommend to any fellow trip advisors
