We just had an amazing flight with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters around the big island. The live volcanoes were incredible to see up close and the valley and waterfalls were truly nothing short of spectacular. Our pilot, Jason, was a wealth of knowledge. It was a mini course on Hawaiian geology, topography and culture to boot. We were lucky with weather and would definitely explore with them again on one of the other islands! Amazing day!!
I was terrified to get on a helicopter. Did it because Hubby wanted to so bad. It was spectacular! Smooth and comfortable and the scenery was spectacular! I would do it again in a heartbeat. I think our pilot's name was Chris. Thanks for the wonderful ride Chris and Blue Hawaiian!
The West Maui/Molokai tour is a great way to see the inaccessible seacliffs in the North Shore of Molokai and the valleys within West Maui. I took the noon tour and we lucked out with great weather. The trip starts from the Kahului heliport ($7 parking) which is somewhat confusing to find because the address they gave is not in googlemaps when I went (I think they now fixed it). The address linked here is incorrect - googlemap "Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Kahului" and it should take you there. I paid some extra to be in the front of their $3M ECO-Star helicopter and it was worth it. The pilot Rick was very knowledgeable and we were able to talk and ask questions while in flight. The tour first goes through the Wailuku side, with nice views of Kahukuloa Head. Saw a mom and baby humpback whale on the way to Molokai while crossing the channel! Molokai is truly the highlight ... the seacliffs were sheer and dramatic, with cascading waterfalls and deep valleys. The coral reef system was also awesome. We didn't go all the way to Kalaupapa unfortunately. Crossing the channel again, we saw many more humpback whales. Venturing close to Puu Kukui was also a highlight. The scenic vistas were impressive, though the trip somewhat feels choreographed (with appropriate background music). In a way this may be a good thing because they tried to capture the best sights consistently. The helicopter itself is very nice, though I longed for the doors-off option when I was in Volcanoes NP, since the window glare made it really difficult to take pictures. I purchased the video but beware it only comes in *.avi format and they couldn't convert it to *mp4. Check the file also before leaving - they gave me a video of some other group and had to wait another week by mail to get the correct one. Overall, this is a great way to get an overview of Molokai (now in my foot-travel checklist) and get intimate with the verdant valleys in the West Maui Forest Reserve. However, it is an expensive trip ($264) - they have to recoup the cost of the helicopters somehow.
Our first ever helicopter ride and tour took place yesterday and we were blown away. We took the West Maui and Molokai tour, it was absolutely spectacular ! Just seeing those incredibly deep valleys, the waterfalls, the jagged mountains, the coastline, the whales, sea turtles and mantra rays in the ocean form above was beyond our expectations. We had a great pilot who was very knowledgeable. I highly recommend Blue Hawaiian!
My family visited Hawaii at the end of February / beginning of March. We were staying on Maui but did an overnight trip to the big island primarily to see the volcano and thought that a helicopter tour would be the best way to get up close and personal. We were not disappointed! We did the "Circle of Fire Plus Waterfalls" tour and upgraded to the Ecostar helicopter for the added room and larger windows. First, the helicopters really are state of the art. I have been in a few helicopters and these are nice. Ample room and great windows for viewing. The pilot really knew what he was doing. He made sure that every viewpoint was visable to all passengers on board. He would circle it on left and right sides so everyone could see well and get pictures if they so desired. And finally, these guys are organized! Everything from the booking process to seat designation & boarding / unloading was organized and well thought out. This is not a cheap tour but if you can swing it, I would highly recommend it. For me, flying over an active volcano will be one memory that I will have forever!
I did it with my girl friend, we booked a star helicopter and trip was West Maui and Molokai. It was recommended by the staff and they told us that pilots also love this one. I don't regret :) first cool thing was that we get free upgrade to Eco Star wchich is much better helicopter, highly recomend to get this one because you get HD quality video from this one which is amazing!! from a star you get low quality video, so its worth to pay a lil bit more for the memories. The trip was amazing was saw so manny whales jumping from the ocean, mountains, waterfalls and beautifull valleys. It was amazing and the stuff was very nice, we bought the USB with our trip video whcih looks very cool and the quality is very good. This company was also a bit cheaper than the other ones.
My friend and I decided to splurge and go on a two hour Eco-Star heli tour of the Big Island. It was exciting and marvelous to see most of the Island in this way. We saw the active volcano, the dormant volcano, as well as the gorgeous Waimea Valley and waterfalls and eastern coastline. I highly recommend this to others as marvelous experience as well as an superb way to grasp the size and majesty of the Big Island.
This is a must do if your in Honolulu Seriously entertaining and worth the time and expense. Would recommend to any fellow trip advisors
You MUST take a helicopter tour!!! I am afraid of heights and afraid of flying...but this was nothing like I expected! Staff was great, pilot was experienced and entertaining! I LOVED it! Worth every penny!
Our tour of West Maui and Molokai with pilot Mike was the highlight of our recent trip to Maui. We were impressed by the Blue Hawaiian staff who booked and rebooked us due to rain, and were overwhelmed by the tour that pilot Mike gave us of remote Molokai and the beautiful West Maui mountains. We whale watched in the channel between the islands, watching a mom and calf and later an enormous male who was an incredible turquoise blue just under the ocean surface. We saw a large group of manta rays on the reef and enjoyed the dramatic scenery of the cliffs and ridges on Molokai. Mike shared some great info and stories. We would highly recommend these nice people and their professional operation. Mahalo!
Must do helicopter tour when on Maui! Had an awesome pilot named Glenda! Definitely worth the value! Try to schedule in advance. Telephone reservations are a breeze to make.
This was my first helicopter ride. We weren't able to see Hana and Haleakalabe because of clouds. They offered us a trip to Molokai and it was fabulous. We had great customer service, a great experience, and Eric the pilot was great. He was informative and a professional.
Starting off they say there was a charge for parking, but when we arrived there was not. You arrive 45 minutes early and take a safety demonstration as well as a video. The ride itself is 45-50 minutes. We were fortunate in that it had rained a lot. There were many rain fed waterfalls on both West Maui and Moloka'i. This tour is the favorite of the employees, or so they told us. You start off going over the west part of Maui. The coast line is rugged and has a lot of the famous red dirt. Then you cross the channel to Moloka'i. The sea cliffs on Moloka'i are breath taking. Then back to Maui, over Lahaina and Kapalua. Through the West Maui mountains and back to Kahului. If you can spare the time, this is a great ride. We did the eco-star. Very quiet and roomy.
Linda (the lady pilot!) was a knowledgeable and friendly guide who showed us the island in an hour. A must see.
