First off, I want to give a shout-out to all the Blue Hawaiian staff. They were all pleasant and polite, in particular because I somehow missed the email that said I was supposed to be there 45 minutes before the scheduled flight. They phoned me as soon as they realized I was late, then again to find out my location as I frantically drove to the airport. We arrived at the check-in desk about 35 minutes late and apologized for my mistake, but everybody was patient and polite as they weighed us and stored our belongings. Then a rep personally walked us to the gate and turned us over to another staffer who gave us a quick safety lecture before taking us on the tarmac with our group. So we made our flight without further drama! I surmise the staffers could have given us a hard attitude and even cancelled our reservation because we didn't make the required pre-flight briefing on time, but to my great relief they were cool and forgiving and full of aloha. Mahalo, guys and gals! The flight itself was great. The day started out overcast, but the skies opened up more as we flew toward the volcanic flow. I had made our flight reservations weeks earlier while the lava was flowing, but wouldn't you know it, the eruption would stop just a few days before our arrival on the island. Oh well, the thrill and joy of flying among the clouds with such clear views of the ocean, sky, forests, and yes - black (not fiery red) lava - was still intense. The pilot (sorry, didn't catch his name) took us over the famous Fissure 8 and destructive lava field and we saw numerous steaming vents and a few steam plumes where a bit of lava was still hitting the ocean. He also showed us older craters and collapsed lava tubes, then headed up the beautiful coastline to see rainforests, a couple waterfalls, the town of Hilo and placid Hilo Bay. We rode in their newer model EcoStar helicopter. I can't compare the quality of ride to the standard model, but our ride was smooth, almost vibration free, and the increased window area gave good sight lines. The noise-cancelling headphones work great, too. All told, a great experience, especially if you've never been airborne in a chopper before. Any flight of any kind is expensive, but it is easy to say that a helicopter tour in a beautiful location is absolutely worth it.
Our Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour was amazing! This place is very professional in the way they conduct their business. Views around Kauai are spectacular from the ground, but are 10-fold better from the air. A big thank you to our pilot, Tennessee Brian!
Dont spend your money and come to Maui without including this in the experience . 85% of the most Beautiful waterfalls can only be viewed by air. Blue Hawaiian is the 5 star helicopter to go with. Top notch new epuipment. VERY comfortable seating.Staff is very friendly. The pilots are great and very knowledgeable about Maui and its history. I suggest that you schedule for an hour and preferably 9 am flight time. Better visibility-less clouds. This review can not provide you breathtaking justice of the unbelievable island but book a flight and really SEE MAUI. ALOHA
Rick was a fantastic pilot. Had a great experience and would recommend this to anyone.
Awesome trip! Highly recommended! We enjoyed our tour with our pilot Wesley a lot!!
Great tour -- got to see more of the island than we could during our trip.
