Loved our trip. The volcano was so interesting to hear about and see. The falls, well... We had some clouds that day and the pilot decided to change course so we ended up seeing just (what looked like) smaller falls. nothing spectacular by far. Overall, I am happy i did it.
Was basically disappointed in this tour. Based on the description I expected the helicopter flight to go at least near the main part/caldera of Kilauea Volcano. But it did not. Flew over a lot of the volcanic shelf and saw an active area with some lava flow. I had previously been to the visitor's center where you can get a better view of Kilauea and the erupting lava than from the helicopter tour. If the tour description said the tour did not go near the main part/caldera, I would not have taken it. Maybe if there were more outcroppings of lava it would have been better. But you cannot make Pele do something she does not want to do. The view was nice if you just want to go on a helicopter tour.
We did this as an excursion off of our cruise ship. I can't say whether the price was a great value but I feel like we got our moneys worth. Our pilot was very nice, explained what he was doing with the copter before he did it so that no one was surprised about the movements and made an effort to make sure that everyone on the trip got to see everything. (think circling both right and left so that everyone got a view). You can get some glimpse of the volcano from the ground but you really get to understand the size of the lave field from the air. We flew out over the ocean to see where there is activity along the shoreline.... including seeing lava coming into the ocean. Then he took us up over an active vent where you could see lava boiling out from underground. After that we flew over other parts of the island where he pointed out things of interest, river, water falls etc and gave us some background on life on the island. All in all a very enjoyable experience that I heartily recommend.
We always like to take helicopter rides when we go to new places and Hawaii is no exception. The great staff advised us of the different packages available and best times to fly, etc. We chose the flight out of Hilo, so had a pleasant drive cross country to get there. Our pilot (Jason) was knowledgeable and considerate in terms of getting in at all angles so all passengers could take good photos of the bubbling lava in the crater as well as the lava flows - to the songs "Comfortably Numb" and then "Ring of Fire" (boom tish boom). Getting as close as possible / allowable to the crater without compromising safety was paramount and it was a job very well executed. Our friends who had never been helicopter riding were very nervous at first but very keen to do it all again one day!!
The entire staff is wonderful. The trip is amazing - seeing lava from the crater, finding a live lava tube and then seeing sooooo many waterfalls. Finally, landing on their own secluded spot where you are up front and personal with the largest waterfall. No rush, they really want you to enjoy your trip. Melinda was our pilot and she was fanatastic. Very knowledgeable about everything while you are on your ride.
Although I live in Waikoloa on the Big Island, my granddaughter was visiting from Oregon so we went for a helicopter ride and it was fantastic. We drove from Waikoloa to Hilo and caught the helicopter from the Hilo Airport. You need to arrive early to watch a safety video but after that it is so fabulous to see the volcanic area from the air and so close. The Eco Tour is a little more expensive but...you get an individual seat, not a bench seat and the viewing is so much better. If anything dont miss out on this ride, then get the video on a flash drive when you're done to share with family back home.
I see there's over 1,000 'Excellent' ratings for this experience and I don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said before. If you are waffling on whether or not to spend the money, as it's certainly a very expensive hour of your life, think about it in terms of the LIFETIME of memories you will have from it and then it looks pretty darn inexpensive for sure! Our pilot, Scott, was both funny and informative. He clearly absolutely loves what he does and this added to the overall enjoyment of the experience. We also broke one of our cardinal rules, which is to NOT purchase the post-experience photo/video and we are so glad that we did! Not only does the video allow us to share our experience with family and friends back home, it has provided us with footage of ourselves in the helicopter and the expression on our faces as we cross over various landmarks is priceless! Also, as there were four of us, we bought two videos, as the second was only $10!
My wife and I took the eccostar volcano tour. The flight with Audie was very informative and enjoyable. We were looking directly down into a lava lake. The falls were an added bonus.
This was an amazing experience. Our tour guide was an ex-navy pilot and provided a wonderful tour of the volcanos & waterfalls. He was friendly and provided lots of history as we flew.
This is a must do. Well worth the money. Me and my wife were a little worried about the potential motion of the helicopter and entered with some apprehension. This was no problem and we really forgot we were in a helicopter as we enjoyed the views.
We took tours on both Hilo & Maui! We have another booked for Oahu in a few days!! It was the BEST money spent on our vacation! From the start the booking agents are friendly and ready to assist. The grounds crew are organized and prepared to keep you safe! Our pilots: Jason in Hilo and Micheal in Maui were fabulous!! We highly recommend this to everyone interested! I’m on planes 3/4 weeks a month and flying in a helicopter was actually better! I felt safer!! Book now!!
It was very cool to take this helicopter tour and both of us enjoyed a lot. It was quite different to view from the sky and the ride was quite smooth. Though it was very expensive to spend 50 minutes for tour for over $200 dollars. 6 ppl +1 pilot will be together in the helicopter. Pilot was very funny but it looks like that there was a internal score system to inspire them to please the customer and our pilot was trying even harder to please the larger group (we are 2 ppl group with another 4 ppl group) and not talk to us so often. One suggestion that you may be left outside the airport fence after checkin without any blue Hawaiian staff, waiting for your own helicopters. No one told you when your helicopter would come and if you are not lucky enough, you may wait up to 15 min to get on your ride.
Great views of the volcanoes, lava flow and the waterfalls. We circled over the opening of the crater so we could see down into the crater and see the hot lava. Fascinating to see the lava flow and how it destroyed the section of the island. Enjoyed the trip!
The brochure obviously shows the lava entering the sea. But we saw that only a split second. Don't set your expectation too high to avoid being disappointed. Nothing to do with the helicopter tour company. This is nature. However we did see the boiling lava inside the volcano from all angles.
Fantastic experience circling the bubbling volcanoes, seeing the lava flow and the extraordinary coastline of Kona (Big Island), the magnificent waterfalls, valleys and vegetation. We even followed a pod of whales frolicking in the ocean - just a fantastic trip. Our pilot was very knowledgeable, relaxed and funny which made our trip even more enjoyable. This was the only Must do thing on my list whilst visiting Hawaii and it certainly didn't disappoint. Our family group of 7 thought the trip was absolutely fantastic and enjoyed the trip immensely. I had the middle seat in the back row and had no problems seeing the sights.
