We took the one hour island tour our of Ko Olina. One of my favorite parts of our vacation. Our pilot was very knowledgeable & told us lots of interesting things about the island. Took some of my favorite photos on our tour. Highly recommend doing this.
This was expensive but well worth it. We paid to set up front as a couple for a better view. Our pilot was Evan and was very good. Just a few bumps due to natural turbulence. He had kind of a low voice but I could still understand his narration of the journey around the entire island. I highly recommend!
We took a Sunday (6th Aug) afternoon helicopter ride and it was such an amazing experience. Evan was our pilot - what an asset to your company! Super nice guy, had an awesome voice for narrating our entire trip. He knew exactly when our 2 year old would fall asleep and he was right! There would be no better way to see Hawaii! Don't forget your camera! Thanks also to the pick-up and return hotel drivers. Highly recommend Makani Kai Helicopters! Ask for Evan! Thanks so much!
This tour was so easy to book and was the highlight of our trip to Oahu! I'm not a fan of heights but couldn't miss this opportunity. We booked our "doors off" 50 minute tour and was absolutely lucky enough to have Pilot Jim as our pilot and host. What a fantastic experience! Our two children, 13 and 5 accompanied my husband and I on the tour. We never felt in danger at any time and my 5 year old was amazed!!! Pilot Jim made us all feel welcome and comfortable, especially checking on and including my 5 year old who got to sit right next to him. Not only did we get to see all of Oahu but Pilot Jim pointed out many aspects of the island we would have never been to experience from the ground. He is absolutely funny and a wealth of information. If only we could have had a 2+ hour tour!!! We will definitely be back to experience it all over again when we return to Oahu. THANKS PILOT JIM for giving us the PERFECT experience for us first timers!!! Just a couple of things to remember. A shuttle will pick you up and bring you back to your hotel (not sure if there is a distance restriction). Ladies bring something to pull back your hair especially if you end up sitting in the back seat of the helicopter. Braid your hair if you can because your ponytail will fly wildly. If you don't like the wind, don't book the doors off tour! Make sure your cameras have a neck strap. Clear plastic phone cases that have a neck strap are provided if you don't have a strap for your phone. Definitely bring something you can take pictures with since there are some incredible photo opportunities all around you. Lockers provided for purses, etc. so bring 4 quarters with you (they can give you change for dollar bills if you don't bring quarters). Be prepared to be in awe!
We treated ourselves to this for our honeymoon. Wow!! What an amazing experience! Staff are really friendly, the views are amazing and the ride thrilling!! Absolutely loved it!!
Margot was such a great guide and pilot. She is very funny. The tour was abit choppy due to the weather but felt very safe with Margot. The best way to see oahu. Especially with no doors. Great GoPro footage.
We've done helicopter tours few times in other cities, but never open door. Here in Oahu with all the beautiful natural sceneries--Wakiki beach, Diamond Head, more beaches and bays, mountains, waterfalls, Dow Plantations, Pearl Harbor just to name a memorable few.. So even though it's a little expensive, we say why not? We found a local company called Sav-On Tours online that handles the same Makani Kai (TA also), couldn't find a whole lot of info about them, but as far as I can tell they've been in business for awhile and reputable, so we took a leap of faith and booked them. The same 45 minutes (Hidden Oahu tour) Doors OFF is $209 with them, on TA or Makani Kai starts at $235 up to $270 per pax. So we saved $52 for us. I say leap of faith is because Sav-On does everything online and by email. No telephone is listed and if they have they ain't answering them apparently they want to make sure there is a paper trail to protect themselves and the customers so there are no mis-communications. I don't blame them. After this experience I can tell you they are good if you want to save a little. The difference in price on the lesser amount ($209 with them or $235 elsewhere) is you sit in the back. The higher $270 is a premium for you to sit up front with pilot. The one they used for this flight is the same type Magnum heli they used in Magnum PI. Pilot plus 2 pax up front, 2 pax behind. Since it's NO Door, we have nothing blocking our view and capturing photos/videos sitting in the back (don't stick you arm out though). And we got full blown wind effect (they provide you headset so you hear the entire narration from pilot and also jackets before you take off--it's windy and chilly). Video/photo capturing devices need to pass their inspection of securely strapped to your hand. Now, the advantage of front seat is 180 view, less wind buffeting (so it's like with doors on, especially for center seat). Back seat more windy (I like it) you see your side mainly and some obstructed view to your partner side and front, but on important stuff the pilot will do left and right bank so we don't miss anything. Do I recommend this? Of course, it's pricey but it's once in a life time thing especially in Hawaii, I say splurge and go for open-door. Pilot Jim did a fantastic job piloting and narrating. We never felt unsafe. We only have a 3 point harness securing us (and an emergency flotation belt in our waist, hope no one ever needs to use), and they have never lost a soul. It's an exhilarating experience. Transportation to and from main pick up points in Waikiki are provided and included.
I took my kids on the doors off helicopter ride. We had such a great time and Pilot Jim was the best. He was informative a funny and you feel very safe in his hands. Thanks again for the great experience !! Highly recommended.
Got up this morning to a beautiful Hawaiian sunrise. Just a little excited. I have booked an “Doors Off” flight around the island Oahu with “Makani Kai Helicopters” for me and the wife. I have lived on Oahu for the last 25 years and have explored every back road I could drive down or hidden beach I could walk to. After this tour with “MKH” my list of places yet to be explored on Oahu just got a little longer. Our flight was for 8:00am. We arrived at the terminal building at 7:30. We were greeted at the door and were immediately taken care of. All the staff were polite, friendly and inviting. The Aloha spirit is definitely very much alive and well with this smiling group. After a short safety film, we were escorted to the helicopter where our pilot helped us get settled in and gave us basic instructions to follow while on the flight. Our Pilot “Jim” was amazing. He flew this copter like he was riding a bike, skillful and confident to say the least. Or was his name “Bob”? (Just Kidding) I will not spoil the rest by telling you the about the tour. I will say that the thrill of the ride, beautiful views and my new prospective on Oahu's landscape is well worth every penny and second spent enjoying this little adventure. If you visit Oahu, Don't miss this one!
Thanks Makani Kai and Pilot Jim! This was a birthday present for my son's 10th. It is something that will stay as a highlight of his childhood and a talking point with his buddies forever. Jim was entertaining and safety conscious. So grateful guys!
Just back from the 50 minute doors off helicopter tour. It was absolutely stunning. Our pilot Jim was welcoming and very informative. Would definitely recommend their helicopter tours . Fantastic and thank you. Cath and matt from the UK
Had an amazing time on the helicopter ride today. The staff were great and the view was even better. We went over Waikiki, diamond head and hanamau bay just to name a few spots. I went in the clised door but would deffinately suggest open door as it isn't scary at all. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because we had 7 people in the chopper which made it a very tight fit and wasn't as enjoyable for the people sat in the middle.
Absolutely the best experience. Ever. Even my family (who was hesitant to come with me) was envious after they saw the pics of Oahu I shot from the tour. My pilot for the day was Nathan, who not only was an easy going, laid back fellow but a great narrator. He, certainly is an experienced pilot; our flight was smooth with minimal chop. Not to mention he happily answered our questions and narrated in between busy ATC communications (especially around HNL airspace). I opted (without qualms or hesitation) for the "doors off" one. This isn't for everyone, but if you love the blast of wind in your face and are a photography nerd like myself, you will truly enjoy this awesome ride. Call me crazy, but getting a whiff of jet exhaust during start-up was just another added bonus for me, lol. In my honest opinion, this was an absolute blast! I genuinely enjoyed my tour and will HAPPILY take another doors-off tour with Makani Kai in the future! :)
While on holidays in Hawaii we decided to do a helicopter flight. There were many to choose from, however we decided on Makani Kai Helicopter as they offered the doors off and there was only 2 seated in the back. After a short delay with our 8.05am we were on our way. It was absolutely stunning. Our pilot Jim was welcoming and very informative. Thanks Jim 🤙🤙 Would definitely recommend their helicopter tours .
We did the 45 min doors off rock n roll ride, and it was the absolute highlight of our holiday!! Margot the pilot was amazing and her commentary about all the areas we flew over was great. Highly recommend, thank you!!!
